nothing better get in the way
of whatever it takes

that's one of my favorite d.c. berman lines from the still-forthcoming silver jews record "tanglewood numbers."  he sings those words in his song "animal shapes."

if you haven't read lolita, then by all means do yourself a favor and crack that spine.

i just read this reflection on nabokov's tale of humbert humbert and it made me want to reread the book.

I woke up with Like Wow, Wipeout in my head this morning.

And it won't go away. So excuse me if I burst into song.

Nabokov's Lolita is one of those books that I find hard to like... Sure, it is good literature, but the narrator is so pathetic, and the general tone of the book so sordid, that it is hard (at least, it is to me) to significantly connect with the story, or to find some kind of aesthetic pleasure in it.  The only level at which I was able to enjoy the book was by considering it an exercise in dark humour... Which it probably was!

there is plenty of aesthetic pleasure in the diction, danny boy.  and in vlad's ability to artfully portray obsession.  and so forth.  and so on.

but these subjective tennis matches never produce a winner, do they?
