A couple of suggestions: Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It's the book that inspired Tarkovsky's Stalker. And The Space Merchants, by Frederik Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth.

I picked up some Robert Silverberg, a Philip K. Dick, a Hal Clement, and an obscure Anthony Burgess (not sci fi).
