have you seen some of these Best of 2004 lists?

the arcade fire took #1 at pitchfork, and came in second at popmatters.  i have to confess that this record finally broke through my critical filter sometime in the past month and melted my icy heart.  once the sun started setting in the middle of the afternoon and the air ootside was so cold it hurt to breathe, the innocence (affected? or sincere?  who cares!) conveyed by those kids in those songs and sounds made me smile.

plus, i'm a sucker for any vocalist who can pull off a decent ian mccullough impersonation.

is spellbound the one where james caan crashes his plane in the woods and phoebe cates rescues him only to force him to play here "spelling bee" game where she beats him everytime he spells a word wrong.

she eventually cuts out his tongue and he is forced to use a speak and spell to communicate.

in the end he spells out "I loathe you" but she hears it as "I love you" and they make sweet love

the end

Pot
I like it a lot
I like to smoke it non-stop
Yeah I like it a lot

Weed
It's the thing I need
Starts from a seed
Turns into weed

Pot - I like it a lot
(Yeah!)
Weed - it's the thing I need
(ow.)
