The Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival SUCKED.

My complaints:
1) At a "bluegrass and blues" festival, it'd be super if a single band played... oh, I don't know... bluegrass or blues.
2) They didn't promote it for shit and even a last minute two-tix-for-$15 special on Groupon (tix were originally $40 each) couldn't get the place more than two thirds full.
3) Their "indoor festival" at the Congress Theater with "three stages" worked like this: main band on stage, poor bastards playing from the multi-level right balcony after they finished while the next big band did sound check, poor bastard playing in the lobby.
4) The event was sponsored by 99.5, the Taylor Swift-loving pop country station. "Go ahead and call them ask to play any song by any of these bands," Jonathan said. Local station XRT plays all of the headliners regularly and would have been a much more logical choice.
5) The advertising--which was everywhere--was for other events coming up at the Congress. This meant that the people there to see the Drive-By Truckers were bombarded with ads for, for instance, Korn. They really know what we like!
6) Worst of all, the sound was HORRID. If you ever want to know what your favorite band would sound like from the bottom of a swimming pool, I highly recommend the Congress Theater. It was flat-out unlistenable from the balcony for Drive-By Truckers. We watched them a little from downstairs, where it improved from "intolerable" to "shitty," but since they'd kept the Truckers until 11:30, we were just too fucking tired to stand up and watch them with bad sound for long.
7) You know that cheesy thing where any time the band refers to the audience, the hack lighting tech flashes those two banks of bright lights into the crowd? For one, don't overdo that. For another, don't do that at all if the place is a third to half empty. It's embarrassing for everybody.

And finally, not the festival/venue's fault, but if DBT lost a little something when Isbell left, they lost some more when Shonna Tucker left. Maybe we o they could have gotten more into it if the sound had been good, but I suspect we'd have still been disappointed.

Joe Pug sounded fine, but I wonder if he'd ever played a big room or festival in his life. Showing up without a drummer and playing all quiet and mellow was a weird choice for the first headliner of the day playing a cavernous room. Dawes was okay. Their sound guy did a decent job. But they still sound like a movie version of a good band instead of an actual good band. That is, they hit all of the notes and are talented dudes with big hooks, but it felt empty somehow. I would like to spend the rest of the weekend punching the guy who did the DBT's sound in the face.

Jesse... how do you like the Rockmelt browser? I have a lot of problems with freezing/pausing and it seems to be related to my Firefox broswer, so I was looking to troubleshoot by trying another.

ha! I knew I super-liked Jon Stewart for a reason.

I believe that that site has since been updated because it says that it is NOT Jon Stewart, but another musician. Jon Leibowitz would have been attending psychology classes at The College of William & Mary in Virginia at the time, not moshing to DK.

I wanted it to be true.  Sad

Karen, I have the Boardwalk Empire DVD from the library until Tuesday.  I watching way too slow.  I'm only through 5.  I definitely didn't watch as many this weekend as I planned.  Great show.  Love it.  I actually watched the pilot twice.  It's so good.

I highly recommend the Congress Theater.

If I was famous, they would probably quote it just like that and put it in their press kit.
