Ooo, cool! Monsieur Lazhar, from Quebec director Philippe Falardeau, got nominated for a best foreign movie oscar! It's a movie with kids, so there's a chance it will actually get the oscar. These kinds of nominations make the bean counters that manage cultural funds reconsider cuts: it looks bad to slash those budgets that allowed people to make oscar nominated movies.
I was going to ask you about that movie last week. Is it any good?
I thought it was good. I liked it but, in my opinion, it isn't Phillipe Falardeau's best. The acting is good, particularly the kids, the story is interesting and the direction is effective. There are a couple of things that don't work very well, but nothing big. It's worth seeing.
