it's not about "showing them", but about awareness.  i would imagine that 90% of the country has never heard of SOPA or PIPA, but definitely use google/wikipedia/etc etc everyday of their lives. if even a fraction of those people become aware of the issue, agree that in both cases the bills are not only ineffective in their intent (protect intellectual property) but they potentially threaten the entire fabric of the internet, the first amendment and the ability of many businesses/websites to operate freely, they would be more inclined to speak up and send a message to congress before it's too late.   for example...my wife sells jewelry on etsy.com.   say another etsy user decides to sell some knock-off hello kitty or micky mouse shit, etsy.com could be shut down completely based on the language of the bill, killing the livelyhood of thousands of people who committed no crime or copyright infringement. awareness is everything.  look at occupy wall street. i'm sure investments bankers were mocking those stinky hippies sleeping in a park and never imagined they would do anything to change the culture of wall street, but now even republicans are decrying "vulture capitalism" in an attempt to make a populist appeal to voters.  without the OWS movement, it would not even be in the discussion and it is now potentially the defining issue of the 2012 election cycle.  i just wish google had more of an explanation of the blackout that every google user in the world couldn't miss. reddit did it right.  too bad only geeks who already know all about it to some extent will ever visit the site.

Yep, wikipedia will be seen by all the students of the world, but again, thats mostly preaching to the choir.

I think Google did ok.    They are far and away the petition drive that is showing up most on my FB feed.

sweet!!  i'd love to live there.  matter of fact, i've added quinnipiac (connecticut) to my potential law school options...what would the commute (hamden, CT) be like from there...an hour?  two at most?  totally out of my price range but worth exploring my options!
