Aw, man, I'm an asshole. I shouldn't be ungrateful - it can be such a fun job sometimes, and I'm lucky to have it. (Though that's how "The Man" gets you, right? Makes you rely on the $$$ so you feel they're doing you a favour?) Anyway, this happened at my job review in late fall. I haven't told Jeff, or my family, just Ryan and one girlfriend who's in the "industry." (cringe face) Basically, my boss wants me to take on a few clients of my own, writers and directors, for 2.5% commission. He says he'll still help with contracts and stuff, but I'll be doing agenting, which is what I'm doing unofficially now for his management clients, basically. So this would mean doing the job I'm currently doing, but also taking more on, which sounds fine on the slow days, but...

My issue with it, and the reason I haven't been telling people, is that I've been trying to think of a way out (so's I can ultimately move to stupid Dallas), NOT a way to embroil me further here. Pogo! and I have talked in the past about how to make that happen, then my dad's illness and passing kept me here longer - and I do still feel obliged to visit my mom pretty much every week to keep her company and help take some of the pressure off my siblings (and the fact that I just said "obliged" shows you what kind of crappy daughter I am...I just add that to my guilt pile), but I know that if she thought for a second that's why I've been sticking around, she'd be pissed at me. (Especially, as I promised my dying father - and he told my mom - that I'll work towards happiness, being with Ryan and so on.)

Anyway, I just don't know what I'm doing anymore, and every day on my way to work, I daydream about not getting off at my streetcar stop and just going on, leaving it behind. But that's ridiculous.

I do need the money to live (Toronto is an expensive city), so it's not like I can just quit with nothing else in the works, and I have no idea what on earth I could do instead. And besides, just getting a new job/challenge isn't going to help get me to the guy I love. It's just me being a whiny baby, I guess. I'm just so very sad all the time.

I just needed to vent, I guess.

Ryan and I did talk about contributing to a ING-type high-interest savings account together to help make things happen. Between my xmas bonus and just not ever going out, I have managed to save $4k to start such an account, and tax return is just around the corner for another bump-up. I don't really know what else to do...

I don't know what I can ultimately do for a living there, either. I'm still daydreaming...

Karen, isn't there an upside to getting some experience at an ostensibly higher skill set, in terms of increasing the variety of jobs you can apply for if/when you move?

Just watched Tyrannosaur. That movie is fucking stunning. My recommendation is to move it to the top of your list of things to see immediately. They're talking Oscar noms for the two leads? How about a Best picture nom? Jesus.

I can't write a decent review of that at 2 in the morning. But Jesus. WOW. WOW.

If you like the Mike Leigh kind of stuff, this will be right up your alley.

Yeah, I suppose if it was a normal job that I could do anywhere, sure.

The main thing, really, is that this just ties me deeper to Toronto. The exact place I don't want to be. Oh well. Thanks for letting me vent.

My Two Cents
You guys deserve some happiness. If you've got a bunch saved, you should just say eff it and make the jump. You can figure out all that 'job stuff' when you get here. There's gotta be something you can do to make money here.

Thanks, Ev. I'm sure there are all sorts of "jobs" I can do for money.

Yeah, there are those kinda jobs, but you could probably temp or find an office job until you could nail down something permanent.
