Apparently my nephew's 2nd gr. teacher made a huge impression on him regarding MLK. He looked up the famous dream speech on the youtube and read along with it. This morning he woke up and asked his mom if there was something special people do on MLK day.

I really really really hate the way the Tim Tebow backlash is being framed.

People don't hate Tebow because he's religious. Half the NFL thinks every first down is a direct reward from Christ Jesus himself.

Tebow is irritating because he wins with and is celebrated for unbelievably meager skills for an NFL quarterback. He's the walking embodiment of the fact that it's better to be lucky than good. It's maddening that even amongst some of the most skilled professional athletes in the game, a guy can succeed over and over simply through dumb luck and fortuitous timing. I think most of America will be delighted when his luck finally runs out and we can all dismiss his golden run as what it is: some dumb asshole's improbable hot streak, instead of getting sidetracked over how much his mouthy religious side has to do with anything.

OK... he did five tracks... That wasn't a fantastic sounding record or anything.

I kind of wish some hot shit producer would take on Cartwright and make him at least an indie star.

I know the world isn't fair and it's not like he's going to top the charts. But why isn't he at least big enough to appear on Austin City Limits and play festivals? He's one of the finest songwriters of this generation and they are a blistering live act.

Probably it's because they're ugly and old*.

*Not ugly and old in the overall scheme of things. Just compared to our normal "stars." But then, if there's room for GbV...

There are a lot of bands I love that write really good songs, but Cartwright's songs are fantastic down to an elemental level. He's got the kind of songbook that usually gets a guy a tribute album.
