I talked to my mom about Simon. I feel a little better. My mom thinks he's having trouble socializing because he's burned out on school and wants to go home. He also asks twice a day when Mama is coming home. I think the poor kid is just having trouble making school work.

Aw geez, I'm a terrible dad...

Tilda talked to Simon's teachers and now we know pretty well what's going on. He's withdrawing because he's not keeping up with the other kids and it frustrates and embarrasses him. Sure, he's got a vocabulary that dwarfs the other kids, but his fine motor skills have fallen behind. And the class has shifted a chunk of its focus lately to crafts and related projects and when he can't keep up, he just announces he's grouchy, quits, and doesn't even try. And then he resents and avoids the other kids.

Tilda and I work with him a ton on language and imagination and even some on music, but I guess Mama was the one who always got him going with coloring and painting and whatnot. And we haven't really picked up that slack at all, I guess.

I feel lousy. I feel like taking the rest of the day off to hang with the poor dude, but of course, I can't.

The wife and kid are both congested and they put on a snoring exhibition last night. I had to seek refuge on the couch. While I was trying to get back to sleep, I watched most of Beginners. That's very good, actually. Not at all the up-with-people, liberals-patting-themselves-on-the-back-about-our-gay-tolerance thing it looks like. It's bittersweet, has an interesting non-chronological structure, and MacGregor is restrained and moving. Definitely recommend.
