Best comment in the comments section refers to her claim (in response to the claim that Jesus was all about helping the poor) that Jesus said that the poor should work...

Unfortunately, - despite the fervent belief of millions of well-meaning liberals who believe they are on the side of the imaginary progressive Jesus Christ - she is almost correct.

Jesus (at least as he is depicted in the New Testament) was very supportive of slavery, and the Bible does indeed say for slaves to fear, respect and serve their earthly masters well.

If he were around today Jesus would come across about as progressive and left-leaning as Mullah Omar to the ipod-sporting liberals who now seek to claim him as one of their own. This is no different from how religious fundamentalists seek to claim Einstein as a Believer. There is no wrong in quoting inspiring words from a wide-range of religious sources, but the left has to abandon this "Jesus was a Socialist Hippie!" strategy ... it in neither efficacious nor historically accurate.

Matt, it doesn't really matter what Jaysus said or what he was about.  The thing is, to believers, religious figures represent whatever the hell the believers want the religious figure to represent.  I mean, just look how the religious right interpret Jaysuses words, eh?  Believers will keep on believing, no matter what you and I say.  The bible belt was, in the past, quite progressive, and they were as religious back then as they are now.

If the "ipod clad liberals" want to see him as some kind of progressive, fuck'em.  As long as they support progressive policies and they don't breach that increasingly tenuous wall separating church and state, who cares?  Good things get done for bad reasons all the time.

Why do we have to keep repeating or reposting what other dumb-shits say.??  I'm not shocked or surprised anymore... I'm tired of looking at facebook and seeing article after article about 'can you believe what this right-wing nut said.??''  YES! I can believe it.. I don't want to hear about it anymore..

On the one hand, I hear you, Tripp. On the other, I think when we lose our capacity for outrage, we lose our desire to try and fight and make things better. It comes from a good place.

Of course, there's keeping a handle on the opposition and there's self-flagellation...

Take a vile anti-semitic pamphlet written in the 30s, replace the word "jew" with "muslim" and, bingo, you have the rhetoric of the "stop de Islamization" of whatever crowd.  The same fears, the same crackpot exaggerations and shadowy conspiracy theories.  The only difference is that many of the right wing morons who spread this shit are also dingbat christians, so they don't necessarily want to exterminate muslims, they rather convert them to jaysuism, by force if necessary.

I quite certain religious nutbars could get along.  All they need is a common enemy.  Atheists like me, maybe?
