I listened to a report on NPR yesterday about the Wall St. occupiers, and the tone of the report sounded as if they aren't being taken seriously. On other news channels, lots of focus on drum circles and how these people occupying Wall St. are not like you and me.

The outpouring of love for Steve Jobs has been pretty overwhelming today.
I'm a little conflicted. I don't usually like CEOs who wield as much power and money as he did. But I'm also remembering the day my dad brought home an Apple II and how mindblowing it was and how many hours I spent tinkering on his and Wozniak's machines. And that's not to mention how much I worshipped the golden age of PIxar.
I'm just not sure where to file him in my brain.
any suggestions?

Yes, but for most of us, we look to NPR as a pretty even-keeled source of real information. Sometimes overcareful, but not in the pocket of any advertisers.

Jon Stewart also did a bit on how they've (the media) moved from "blackout" mode to "circus" mode.
Which follows Ghandi's famous rule pretty closely.
"first they ignore you. then they laugh at you. then they fight you. then you win."
So that means we're halfway there, i guess?

I don't know NPR. What was their attitude during the Dumbya years? How did they report the Irak invasion?

How is it that I know CBC but you don't know NPR? Get out of your cave.

Take the CBC: it's supposed to be at arms length from the government. But I have the distinct impression that they have been increasingly leaning right (particularly their english section) since the conservatards took over.

They were built as the public radio broadcasting, but have largely taken themselves off the govt. teat by very successful listener fund-drives. (some markets more than others. the NY outpost is completely independent, smaller markets still get some govt funding).
I suppose I'd put them on par with BBC. They respect sceince and verifiable fact. Because of that they are painted as very lefty.
I think because of those accusations they sometimes fall for the hollow "balanced" approach of letting both sides say their piece and leaving it at that.
They are trustworthy but not progressive.

Well for one thing, NPR runs BBC World News.

Let me rephrase that for clarity. I should have said:
NPR plays BBC news updates. I didn't mean to sound like they own or control the BBC.

Thanks Kurt, but I don't have the time. I only listen to the radio while I work, and anything involving talk is too distracting. The only radio I listen to these days is a couple of music shows on BBC radio six.
