As I read this, I can't help but wondering where it's going. Will there be a conflict or a bad guy introduced at some point?
Good question. I've always enjoyed shades of gray, so I avoid traditional good vs. bad conflict (even while adopting the trappings of a genre traditionally concerned with black and white morality). The story makes you wonder whether the Super-Peers are good or bad. They're certainly self-involved.
Really the conflict so far is about the problems the Super-Peers make for themselves (and the rest of the world).
I'd say my biggest concern with the story is sympathy...Who can you identify with? Who can you root for?
Free Agent is a sexist asshole, but I've also tried to make him the funniest, most entertaining character. I just want to punish him and make him suffer...as you'll see in coming weeks and coming chapters. My goal is to bring him so low that redemption is the only possible direction for him.
Dr. Rainbow is the character I wanted people to admire and like the most. So chapter 2 will really focus on developing her...yet I still have her doing some pretty Machiavellian things. And the darkness inside me can't help but make her do some regrettable things in future pages.
God-Boy is a force beyond nature. I enjoy the apocalypse he creates in his wake. I think about "god" as a creative force, but I want to show the connection between creativity and destruction. The most creative event in the universe was the Big Bang and that's a huge explosion that never stopped. A volcano can be seen as destructive, but it creates land (or an 8th Continent) and volcanic rock breaks down into soil very quickly.
So Vs. Nature conflict is the big thing to this point. I'm trying to create a very dangerous, volatile world where things can happen very quickly.
There is some fighting of monsters to conclude chapter 1. Next week's page finally features the challenge match between Princess Rainbow and Free Agent.
I see a lot of internal conflict among the Super-Peers, but events will galvanize them against a larger force in the future.
