hey Cappy,  when I'm mixing a song I usually pan things ehhhhhh pretty evenly.. That is, I rarely put the guitar all in the left channel and the bass all in the right channel.. It varies from song to song really.. usually I have the bass panned around the guitars.. I was wondering what your methodology is.

I'm with you.  As much as I like the heavy-duty panning on mid-60s records, that approach had a lot to do with technical limitations and usually isnt the best way to go.

I try to keep thing symmetrical in terms of frequency.    So if I have  a bass track at 50% right, then I'll put a low-end heavy synth at 50% left.     That way you not only have an even mix from left to right, but it also solves a lot of frequency interference problems without resorting to heavy EQing.

When you say you pan the bass AROUND the guitar, do you mean you have more than one bass track?   If so, is it two peformances, or one performance that you tracked directly and on mic simultaneously?

A lot of the heavy panning in the sixties can also be attributed to the fact that stereo mixing sessions were a lazy afterthought to mono, from what I understand.

This reminds me I totally abandoned my beatles stereo vs mono, new remix vs cd versions, etc, over in HIWTPYS well over a year ago.

I little more coffee and a cig, and then I'll get this last workout out of my life. I'm toying with the idea of using the upcoming trip to Vail to start an extended shrimp detox. No firm commitment as yet, just considering.

I stayed up late watching Message From Space last night. Probably the most fun I've had by myself in a while.

Regarding panning, one of my favourite records is probably Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend: lead guitar is mostly on the right, rhythm guitar mostly on the left, bass and drums all over the place, but mostly in the middle.

Yeah, he got some serious separation on that record.     I think part of it was the fact that he used a whole lot less reverb than was in style at the time.   He didn't let that cereal get soggy.

Hey Tripp.    How do I know Jennie McGathy?     She worked at a label back in the day, right?

I just got this last night.    An ex-Pixar designer made this e-Book for tablets.   Its gorgeous and charming as hell.

Great antidote to Cars 2.

PASTA strainers are now considered suitable religious headgear in Austria ... at least as far as the transport authorities are concerned.

Ramen!

Today, or more likely sometime tomorrow, I will finish writing the last chapter of my Ph.D. thesis.

About time too, as I am really sick of it.

The work won't be finished, I will still have corrections, a few things to change in the previous chapters, and annexes to prepare.  But the heavy shit will be done.

Huzzah for me!
