I've read some Varley too, the Gaea Trilogy (Titan, Wizard and Demon)... I remember enjoying myself, but I was 16 or 17, so I can't really give a fair assessment.

Ev, I used to dig John Varley but maybe he was a hack..  I was much younger and it doesn't seem like his name gets dropped very often.

Now that you mention it, I have one of his books and I keep forgetting about it. I'll read it since you recommend it.

I have to admit that I don't exactly know what a hack is. Someone on the board called Vinge a hack, but I liked him ok. Maybe the same person called Heinlein a hack, too.

Someone on the board?    mr. disappointment

I feel the need for justification!

In this context, a hack is someone who writes hastily or routinely, often according to set formulas.  Vinge, Heinlein and many others in Sci-Fi were, foremost, commercial writers writing for a particular demographic.

I'm a huge sci-fi nerd, it is my favourite literary genre. I am very familiar with sci-fi tropes, and I can spot them from afar.  Now, calling someone a hack doesn't mean they're necessarily boring.  But it does mean that they often write in a purely utilitarian manner.  The thing with a lot of classic sci-fi is that it is often entertaining in spite of the bad writing.

I assure you, I enjoy reading these guys (well, maybe not Vinge), but they're a bit like pizza, in the sense that even bad pizza is still pretty good pizza.  Or sex.  Even when you know it's bad, you still enjoy it.

I read about half of The Rat Coachman last night. It's about what happened to the rat who was turned into Cinderella's coachman after the clock struck midnight. Pretty amusing entertaining stuff.

Sorry, I've undoubtedly done some damage to my brain over the years, and I'm getting old. I can't always remember who said what.

I guess I shouldn't have said 'hack'. I just meant that he's not considered one of the greats..

Moe, you should also give Jack Vance a try.
