Watched True Grit last night.  Dug it.   But what WAS the deal with everyone not using contractions in their speech.. ? Is that just the way the original book is written.?  It felt simultaneously authentic and contrived.

I hate to say it but the Mid-south is due for an earthquake. There have been a lot in Arkansas lately..  I'm starting to think a preparedness kit is a priority.

Good morning! I went to Austin for the March to Save Texas Schools. It was a good thing to do, although it felt like an exercise in futility.

I found out that TX is #4 in teen pregnancy, and #1 in repeat teen pregnancy. Let's hear it for Texas!

The bullshit being said on the net surrounding the problems with the Japanese nuclear reactors is really getting on my nerves.  Many rational arguments can be made against nuclear energy: of the top of my head, there's what to do with nuclear waste, the fact that the fissile elements needed to produce nuclear fuel aren't renewable and the problems related to nuclear proliferation.

However, using the japanese reactors to argue that nuclear reactors aren't safe is, as far as I'm concerned, a shitty argument.  It took a 8.9 richter scale earthquake followed by a huge tsunami to make them go haywire.  And, as far as I know, even after these two extreme events and all kinds of other problems, containment still hasn't been breached.

By the way, I'm no big supporter of nuclear energy.  I think that, for north america, with it's average low population density and relatively abundant fossil and renewable energy resources, nuclear power stations are useless.  But I can understand why a country like Japan, densely packed and without much coal, gas, oil or hydro power, decided to adopt nuclear energy.

I agree with all of that Dan, but I think to some extent, the focus on the damaged nuclear plants is less about hysteria than it is about a certain sort of grim fatalism. That is, the shit that has happened so far is so mind-blowingly bad, it seems almost inevitable that more horrible shit is coming.

People are scared because they can't draw a line on exactly how bad this is going to get.

I dunno what it is, I just I think that, with all the death, devastation and disease now threatening tens of thousands in Japan, it is trivializing and almost obscene for the media to spend so much time worrying about damage to nuclear reactors.

Yes, but here's what investors can do to make money from the tragedy in Japan...

I really don't think they're trying to be hysterical or to draw attention away from the human element. I think people are frightened of the nuclear plants because they just don't know when this is going to stop getting worse.
