I've been reading that a conscious computer, like nuclear fusion and flying cars, is 20 years in the future since at least the early 90s, maybe even before that (I started reading science mags sometime in the mid 80s).

I reckon even when one does reach that point, it'll take us a decade or so to fully admit/realize it.

People get squirmy about acknowledging intelligence in other forms.

I just hope that whenever it happens and I'm able to ask my computer something and it says "CALCULATING...!" then makes those old ticker-tape noises.

It is also possible that sentience will emerge gradually and accidentally, as a side product of the increasingly complex things we ask computers to do.  And computers may become sentient in ways that are quite different from our own sentience, which will make it even harder to understand it.

I just cheered myself up with heavy drinking and a re-screening of The Other Guys. I think that's the funniest asshole/non sequitur/silly gibberish Hollywood comedy in years. It is a stupid, stupid movie. But it has so many out-of-left-field one liners, I have to laugh anyway.
