Saw Black Swan last night. I liked it, but almost entirely based on Natalie Portman's performance, which I thought was kinda brave. She was just so brittle and fragile and driven. The story itself was kinda worn, enough so that we wereall calling out the next plot point well in advance pretty early on. Well shot, though.

Was it one of the Crappiters or maybe a blogger I read who said Barbara Hershey looks like the female Mickey Rourke now? Spot fucking on.

I remember reading that.  I think it was Kurt who said it.

Kurt or Evan.

Red wine can burn up my stomach also. I'll drink it (duh), but usually go for white. (Lots of Pinot Grigio of late.)

I'm such a delicate flower that way.

Today marks one year since we got my dad to the hospice, and exactly three weeks from now will be a year since he died. I've been thinking a lot about that (well, like only every day...but I had two days last week where I didn't cry one single time, so I guess I'm getting better) and I've really been feeling sorry for myself, and my family, so apologies for (extra) crankiness. Really.

I've become totally seasonal.    I drink nothing but red when its cold out and nothing but whites (especially Alsacian stuff) when its warm out.

I often go that way. Almost never have red in the summer. But I do split the red/white consumption in winter, just depends on mood.

Have I mentioned here previously my fondness for Portuguese vinho verde? Cheap, modest, low in alcohol, the tiniest bit fizzy, fruity but not cloying. More of a warm weather pleasure, so not really on the brain as much right now, but practically consumed by the gallon around our house in the summer. I also really like wines from Alentejo, and port (when I can afford it, which isn't often these days). One of my fondest memories ever is riding a train from Porto to the Algarve just staring out the window idly, looking at all the otherworldly cork trees.

Vinho Verde is probably my wife's favourite wine.  She also likes Mateus, a Portuguese Rosé wine.  I agree, they're the perfect summer wines.  I like the wines from the Beira region (in my opinion, the area near the Dão river produces some fine wines) and Douro region.   Oh, I also like a variety of red wine made near the town of Setubal called Periquita.  I usually don't like drinking strong tasting wine at supper: the Periquita is a light wine, not too much alcohol, not too acidic.  Some people would find it boring, but I like it.

Oh, I like Port, but I love Muscatel from the Favaios area in the higher Douro valley.  Cheaper than Port and just as sweet!  It's probably my favourite aperitif wine.

By the way, I lived five years in Sines, a coastal town in the Alentejo region.  I used to walk amongst those cork trees.

Huh.    That tampon sex sponge actually makes pretty good sense.

They could probably work on the packaging though.

Ooooh, oooooh! I like port too. Not all the time, mind, but it can be really delightful. I've had the Perquita stuff, pretty good -- you're right, not a lot of body, so a good table wine, I think.

I forgot to mention rose. I dig that too (super-duh, it's pink lady wine, what not to love?) but only the dry ones. I don't like the sweet stuff.
