the G__'s had done a show in Denver and my Carvin head died on me right before the show.. It turned out that the ohmage was set lower than that of the cabinet (or vice versa) so it just died.. The night of the show there happened to be a great soundman at the club.. (actually this was in Boulder) and he just took a line out of the SansAmp pedal I used to play through.. and he gave me plenty of myself into the monitors. They had huge side monitors on either side of the stage as well as a full compliment of monitors at our feet. So it was great to play onstage with no amp.. At one point I raised the bass over my head and held it up to one of the side-monitors and got this crazy phaser-y feedback going..
Anyway, the next day was a Sunday and we couldn't find anyplace open except for some crappy old speaker repair service in some non-descript part of town (of Denver).. we go in there and this morbidly obese dude is sitting at his 'work station'. The whole place looked like somebody's garage. Lots of shelves and tables with parts to amps and speakers just laying around everywhere.. Somehow we came across the Sunn head just sitting on one of the shelves and we negotiated a trade ( and Scott stole a sweet speaker cable for me that I still use to this day). We traded the Carvin head plus $100 for the Sunn and I was pretty pleased.. As we're about to walk out the front door, I have the Sunn head in hand, the fat guy suddenly yells out "WHAT THE FUCK?! I DON'T WORK ON SOLID STATE.!!" And I was like "RUN.!! START THE VAN!! START THE VAN!!" And I literally leapt into the van holding the Sunn and we squealed outta there as the fat guy made his way to the front door of his shop, shaking his fists at us..
ok, I made up the part about the shaking fists..
Man, that's a good story! I'm sure you've never told it to me, I would have remembered. By the way, that's a great score: those Sunn model-t heads go for a lot of cash these days. They've been used by a number of doom and stoner bands, so they've become popular among that set, and since they're kind of rare, their prices have been steadily going up. I think thy usually go for more than $1200, I remember seeing one for sale in Montreal for $1500. Keep an eye on it when you play out, Tripp!
