We were talking about Alejandro Escovedo recently and I mentioned I found him decent but not especially noteworthy. Yesterday, I saw a clip of him and Springsteen doing "Beast of Burden" at the Stone Pony and I have to admit, he sang the hell out of that song. So maybe I've just heard the wrong stuff? His new single gets played all the time on my community radio station and it's nice but forgettable Springsteen-esque stuff. Does he have better stuff I could hunt down? Or is it more a matter of him being better live?
The older I get, the more I sort of enjoy being wrong about artists. Just means there's more stuff to enjoy.

I realize that the little smiling nod he gives the Boss early in is a cue to take the next verse, but I like to imagine he looks like that because he's hopeful Bruce will really make love to him.

"Beast of Burden" is like a lot of Stones songs. Mediocre singers just do a karaoke bit on it, but there's plenty of real soul for people who have the chops. Escovedo sings that one the right way for sure.
