Jeff, what was that DVD player that allowed you to connect a hard drive via USB?  Does it read pretty much everything as long as it's on an external drive hook-up to it?  I have an old TV, and I don't feel like going thin-screen.  But I would like to be able to download stuff and watch it on my old CRT TV.

Dan, the thing I use isn't a DVD player, just a little digital media player. It can play any kind of file, though.

I use Western Digital's WD TV Live. It has two USB 2.0 ports. You can hook in drives (external or USB) through these. You can also use either a wireless dongle hooked into one of the USB ports or an ethernet cable to make it network-enabled. Then you can play anything on your network. It will play audio and video and peruse photos using a pretty nice looking interface and a little remote. It hooks direct to your tv via regular or hi-def component cable or you can buy an HDMI cable (it has a jack). The whole thing is about two-thirds the size of a moderately thick paperback.

They sell for around $90-ish US for the one I bought or there's a newer one called the WD TV Live Plus that can also handle Netflix streams for $119.

Ebert's review for that one was memorably scathing.

Does it have a composite video connection?  You know, the analog one with the yellow and white RCA connectors?  That's what my old TV uses.

Thanks Jeff!  That looks promising.  Oh, does it play 4:3, or do I have to switch my TV to 16:9?

I think you can choose that in the menu.

steaming pile of poop.

Ebert's review for that one was memorably scathing.

I really admired Jackson's crosscutting in that one.  The guy can direct.

The material is not the best and I'm sure he gutted the novel.

But there are some great, intense scenes.  Stanley Tucci is scary.

It's certainly a lesser movie than Heavenly Creatures.

Yes, I primarily blame the script.   There were just no surprises.   After I settled into the premise and enjoyed some of the early 70s design work, I felt like I was merely following along.

But I'll agree to both those points.    Some very interesting camera/cgi work   (the vertical pan down into the dungeon was really effedtive).    And Tucci gave me the super willies.

Maybe not a full on pile of poop.   Good elements, but the whole just didn't pull me in at all.

Dan, I haven't read Friday or Podkayne yet.  Thanks for the suggestions.

A couple Heinlein recommendations for Moe...

Methuselah's Children
Time Enough for Love

Really I'd like to recommend Time Enough for Love, but it's the sequel to Methuselah's Children...so you'll get more out of TEfL if you read MC first.

I guess for the full effect you could read The Past Through Tomorrow (collecting all the Future History series, including MC), but most of the stories don't directly relate to TEfL.  BUT if you become a Heinlein fan it's certainly a fun collection with some of his best short stories.

TEfL is one of Heinlein's craziest books.  I was disturbed, appalled, and a little aroused despite myself.  Great stuff.
