I alternate between reading fiction and non-fiction, and since I'm a history and science buff, my non-fiction reading includes a lot of history... But I may have gotten way in over my head this time: I'm reading La Méditerranée et le Monde Méditerranéen a l'époque de Philippe II, by Fernand Braudel, and it's a three volume monster filled with references that force me to constantly consult a dictionary and the net. Fun read, though: lots of minute and fascinating historical trivia about Mediterranean history, Italian city states in particular.

Thanks for the kind words about my dad, everybody.
He's still in the hospital undergoing tests and trying to get his fluid retention down. They've gotten about 21 lbs. of fluid out of him so far, but (and I feel bad sharing this, so skip ahead to the next paragraph if you're squeamish dudes, but I kinda need to acknowledge how weird/scary his situation is) his scrotum is still approximately the size of a canteloupe.
He's scared and tired and pissed off. The other night, the glass of water they left him fell over and he was soaking wet. Since he couldn't move, he paged for a nurse. No response. So he tore out his heart monitor and made it look like his heart had stopped. No response. He ended up having to use his cell and call in to the front desk to have them send someone. Doesn't exactly put your mind at ease.
The worst part is, they have no idea what is causing this. At least his current doctor is willing to look past my dad being fat. As he said, "We have many patients your age who are overweight, but it's pretty uncommon for them to repeatedly build up with fluid until they need hospitalization." The heart doctors have cleared him and now the kidney folks are having their turn.
Mama spoke to M______ about how Dad's symptoms remind her of the times she and her husband got cancer. M______ wouldn't translate it and told her mom to knock it off, but I understood enough.
Maybe it is cancer. I don't know.

I have gotten to the point where I rarely drink during the week now. OTOH, I usually kill a 30 pack over the weekend.

How do the men in my family get so fat? It's a fucking mystery.

In more cheerful news, we took Simon to the neighborhood pool yesterday and kid went batty with joy. He kept trying to push off from me to tray and swim on his own. Not yet, tiger!

Airplane! is 30 years old. Here's a comparison of that movie and Zero Hour, the clumsy melodrama it was based on.
