Word is, Derek Jeter's agents have his "starting point" for negotiations for a new contract at 6 years, $150 million.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2010/11/26/2010-11-26_jeters_price_is_high____it_is_far.html

I had no idea Jeter was into hard drugs.

For that money I say lifetime deal, Yankees get trademark of his likeness for marketing and merchandise, public appearances as codger, etc.

Jeter receives the title of shortstop emeritus and becomes a living Mickey Mouse.

What I'm saying is he has more value as a Yankee now as a personality and image than as a player.

It's really all about his rivalry with A-Rod. A-Rod is getting mid 20mil a year until he's 42. Jeter believes he's even more important to the franchise and deserves at least as much.

Thing is, A-Rod negotiated that deal coming off his best season, at age 32, in a market that was topping out, with high profile competitors ready to pounce and sign him if the Yanks failed.

Jeter is coming off his worst year ever, is 36 years old, in a market that is bottoming out, with no big market/big pocket teams in search of a shortstop anyway, even if he were coming off a great year.

Speaking of getting old, how about Jamie Moyer's Hall of Fame plaque:

Mickey Mantle's answer to a Yankees questionnaire about memorable times at Yankee Stadium

Raunchy and, apparently, real.

not a baseball fan, but Cliff Lee won me over this season. And even if you don't like baseball like me, you couldn't help but be impressed by that dude. I'm thinking the Rangers brass is gonna try to overpay and f everything up they have going with a big extention (insert punchline JSG). It is nice to see a home grown team excel, I hope they don't sell out and cripple the young team

Yankees Re-Sign Popular Mascot Derek Jeter

Following weeks of tense negotiations, the New York Yankees finally agreed Wednesday to a $51 million, three-year deal to bring back the team's much-loved mascot Derek Jeter. "This decision was for the fans, because so many of them come to games just to look at Derek or take pictures with him," Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters, adding that the mascot's presence alone is enough to boost team morale. "With his goofy smile and antics on the field, he makes Yankee Stadium a family experience. Kids just love the hilarious way he swings and misses at pitches and struggles to cover ground at shortstop." Cashman hinted that Derek Jeter would have an updated appearance this season, with an improved, slightly balder look.

I liked Conan's joke....the Yankees were left with no choice but to buy the Phillies.

HA! Saw this clip online and it brought back fond memories. That's late 40s Nolan Ryan beating the ever-loving shit out of a young Robin Ventura.
