mornin y'all!  so my news to the boss went over MUCH better than i expected.  We made it a month rather than 2 weeks.  (i'll stay through May to get some of the big projects on the horizen off the ground.)  She even asked if i'd consider JUST coming in to teach classes (which i love) twice a month or whatever, while some new person is hired to be the 9 to 5 bullshit office job/daily grind stuff (which i hate).  i accepted (without fully committing).  So i get to continue the fun stuff without the stressful stuff.  and get to decide when the fun stuff is convenient, AND i'll be able to make a little money at the same time.  couldn't have worked ourt better actually, and i was scaaaaaared  shitless of what might happen, considering the last time.

Jesse, have you ever heard of the "Popcorn Box" media player?

http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=productspec&item_id=12

That one's for experts that aren't playing around. It has a built-in torrent client and can also collect and assemble Usenet files.

Looks interesting - but I'm not sure that it's worth the $. The price on hardware is dropping, and most of the necessary software is freeware nowadays. I'm still paying for cable (and writing it off on my taxes) and supplementing it with BT and Usenet as necessary.

I think if I lived alone, I might spring for one of those Popcorn players. But since I want a unit the other members of my family can use without much hassle, I'm glad I went with the WD TV Live. I very, very nearly did the Media Center Thing, but I had this sinking feeling I'd constantly be enlisted to make this thing work or that one or that it might be commandeered for games. Add to that my unwillingness to mess with Windows anymore and my wariness of having yet another Linux box to suck me into tinkering with and it was easy.

I just wanted a box to play stuff on. Any stuff. I seem to have found it.

You're right about the cost of storage though. I do see myself in a few years starting to obsessively catalog ripped movies and tv shows the way I have long since archived audio. If a 1 TB external has gone from $300 to $200 to $75  over the last few years, I think much bigger drives, maybe even user-friendly RAIDs are coming soon.

I had tried to post a review of my WD TV Live earlier, but I had a connection hiccup and it got lost. I guess I sort of covered some of it above anyway.

Basically, though: it's a really neat little set-top box that plays any file you can throw at it, correctly renders 720p and 1080p, has a lovely, intuitive menu, and even has built in interfaces for YouTube, Pandora, Flickr and some other sites. (Provided you plug in an ethernet cable or give a USB wireless dongle.) It can access network files, too.

I'd still recommend a Media Center PC like Tripp uses if you want total flexibility. But for ease of use, this really can't be beat.
