Are you asking why a guy whose career was nearly derailed by a rival wouldn't go for a plan that includes an exact duplicate of him? I'm not saying that not wanting a rival is the greatest reason to kill yourself every night, but it is A reason, and one that goes with his life experiences to some extent, no?

Did they ever indicate the duplicate had the experiences of dying? I don't think they did. Functionally, for the clone, it is the same as being teleported, except for the knowledge that he is actually a duplicate whose original is elsewhere dying. That's not masochism at all, if you don't have to experience the death yourself.

Even the use of the word "clone" is probably off here, as these are duplicates, not clones. [/spoiler]

[spoiler]Wolverine gets into the duplicating machine, then his duplicate appears in the balcony, then Wolverine goes through a trap door into a tank of water and DROWNS.  When Wolverine does the trick, he DIES.  That is suicide.

The duplicate does not experience the death, BUT he makes the same decision to kill himself the NEXT show.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]Yeah, but his decision to "kill himself" includes the knowledge that he will live on as an exact duplicate with the same consciousness, no memory of the dying, and all of the acclaim from an impossibly excellent trick.

I think you're giving much more import to the "but it's not really him, it's a duplicate" viewpoint than the character himself does. The man standing at the end of the trick, is the same guy, whether he was born that or generated. He's not a clone, he's an exact duplicate with the same consciousness and memories. Obviously, Wolverine views the duplicate's life as being a direct continuation of the original life, not a shadowy knockoff or echo. So for all intents and purposes, he isn't killing himself, just sacrificing one of two identical versions of himself in a way that brings no pain or even discomfort to the version left standing.

We're dealing with a world where one magician will chop off his own fingers to make a trick believable, but you can't buy that a guy could kill one of his two identical bodies even if he doesn't have to feel it or remember it?[/spoiler]

Friend of mine just digitzed and posted Meringue: Music From the Mint Green Nest

The greatest piece of wax to ever come out of Florida.   High High High Recommend.
