It was common, in old encyclopaedias and maps, to include a fictional entry or a fictional landmark amongst the material, so that they could easily prove, if needed, that their work had been copied.

Thats really interesting.

The reason this one is interesting is the date and the stakes. This isn't just some mythical thing from illustrated maps from 500 years ago. This was on standard maps as recently as the 90s. And its nonexistence is more than a correction; it costs Mexico hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars in oil.

Who mapped the sun king?

Woa, was Louis XIV that big?

They still do it.  According to wikipedia, the New Oxford American Dictionary (at least the 2005 edition) has the word esquivalience, defined as “the wilful avoidance of one’s official responsibilities.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esquivalience

These kinds of little traps exist in telephone books, computer code, maps (street names beyond the margin may not be there on the ground), dictionaries of biography, and other works that are hard to research but easy to copy.

I find myself thinking about The Prestige's plot too much....
When Wolverine first clones himself, his first reaction is to kill his clone.  Ooh, very Sartre of him.  I think he should've made peace with one of his clones and do the Transported Man the same way Batman did it, with a double.  But Wolverine is a murdering bastard.  OK, his first reaction is to kill his other.  Fine.

But why would he then agree to KILL HIMSELF every night of the show?  His first reaction to his clone was homicidal.  Why the 180 degree shift in personality to the suicidal?

Every time he does the trick, he is consciously killing himself!  100 separate times the surviving Wolverine clone willingly commits suicide.  If I can buy that even once, how can I buy it 100 times?  It makes no sense to me.

It makes more sense that he would just try to kill his clone after every show.
So I ask you, does the movie make any fucking sense?  I say no.

It doesn't matter if it makes any sense, man!  They do it because it's "cool"!

Sad news: an internet friend of mine (a fellow music gear geek) just passed away.  You know why he passed away? Because he was american, and too poor to afford healthcare.  He had been suffering from flu like symptoms for the last week, and because of his limited finances, he refused to go see a doctor.

Are you asking why a guy whose career was nearly derailed by a rival wouldn't go for a plan that includes an exact duplicate of him? I'm not saying that not wanting a rival is the greatest reason to kill yourself every night, but it is A reason, and one that goes with his life experiences to some extent, no?
