I kinda liked The Box.. it played to my Twilight Zone love..  Not really a satisfying movie but I thought it was stylish weirdness. You're right about the wallpaper Kurt. That made me think of Kubrick somehow.  I dug the score by the Arcade Fire people.

Yeah, Arcade Fire did a good job.

I didn't like the Box even as much as Southland Tales.

But yeah there's something Kubrick about the movie.  Reminds me a bit of Birth which is a very Kubrickesque creeper as well.

I couldn't make it through Southland Tales.  I might have to give it another try someday.

I'd call The Box a misfire, more than a failure. I thought it was marvelous in terms of creepiness and tone, even if it didn't amount to much. So I thought it was worth seeing. But I agree with Kurt that it felt like Kelly was trying to shoehorn his weirdness into a commercial package.

Have I mentioned about 5000x how much I hate movies where superior alien intelligences come to earth to judge us for all of our failings? Yeah, I thought I had.

Southland Tales was just batty. I'll still watch an overstuffed, batshit movie if there's talent behind it, just for the great moments. But I can't really defend that one.

He really does need a writing partner.

I heard an interview with Kelly where he said he kinda embraced all the 'notes from the studio' (about The Box).  Like, that's the bane of a director's existence but he tried to dive into the wave. probably to show that he could be a team player but he really tried to make it all work..  The Box might've been better if he'd been left to his own devices.   Maybe.
But yeah, the score is probably the best thing about that movie.  And James Marsdens' hair.

I won't say you should.
