... Of bullshit.
I was leafing through a book by
this guy
yesterday called "Propaganda", and it got me thinking about bullshit.
Quote
One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry. In consequence, we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, we have no theory. I propose to begin the development of a theoretical understanding of bullshit, mainly by providing some tentative and exploratory philosophical analysis.

Boy, this thing is slow this morning... And I don't mean slow as in you don't post. I mean slow as in slow connection.
Palin ridiculed over use of Canadian health care
To be fair, our system became public only in 1966, and she was a kid at the time. But it's rather stupid of her to talk about this considering the kind of horseshit she has been saying about public healthcare systems. Open mouth, insert foot.

Yeah, but is it in 3D?
and IMAX!!!!
weirdly was thinking about the soundtrack this morning, and how hard its going to be to live up to Wendy Carlos. So far sounds like they're just dropping in some Terminator cues.

Ah, that's good! Yeah, 24 hour news channels and the internet are probably two of the reasons why bullshit has gone supernova.

You remember that TV show by Penn & Teller called Bullshit? I saw most of the 1st season, it was funny and entertaining at first, but then I got bored and I gave up on it. The show was, funnily enough, mostly bullshit: no matter the subject, they always chose the most far out extremist to talk for the thing they were against, it was shooting fish in a barrel. Most of the arguments were quite poor and sensationalist. Plus, it became quite clear quite fast that Penn & Teller are rabid libertarians, which is a kind of strongly scented bullshit. The last straw was a show they did on second hand smoking, which was complete bullshit.

Yep. Kinda lost my love and Penn and Teller over the past couple decades. But he'll always have a place in my heart for funding those Moe Tucker and Jad Fair records in the late 80s. Those are tasty jams.

The Power of Political Misinformation
Quote
...a series of new experiments show that misinformation can exercise a ghostly influence on people's minds after it has been debunked -- even among people who recognize it as misinformation. In some cases, correcting misinformation serves to increase the power of bad information.
