Ignorant film critic reviewing Alice in Wonderland: Perhaps this is harsh – by most standards it’s a good fantasy flick with some fun, quirky bits – but you expect more from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Can you imagine the indignity for Henry Selick? His most successful film has another director's name in the title and is commonly cited as his work instead of yours.

I was craving Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread and found a delicious recipe by the Barefoot Contessa...

    *
      Cook Time:

      35 min
    *
      Level:

      Easy
    *
      Yield:

      12 large pieces

Times:

Prep
    10 min
Inactive Prep
    20 min
Cook
    35 min
Total:
    1 hr 5 min

Ingredients

    * 3 cups all-purpose flour
    * 1 cup yellow cornmeal
    * 1/4 cup sugar
    * 2 tablespoons baking powder
    * 2 teaspoons kosher salt
    * 2 cups milk
    * 3 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
    * 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted, plus extra to grease the pan
    * 8 ounces aged extra-sharp Cheddar, grated, divided
    * 1/3 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts, plus extra for garnish, 3 scallions
    * 3 tablespoons seeded and minced fresh jalapeno peppers

Directions

Combine the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, eggs, and butter. With a wooden spoon, stir the wet ingredients into the dry until most of the lumps are dissolved. Don't overmix! Mix in 2 cups of the grated Cheddar, the scallions and jalapenos, and allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 by 13 by 2-inch baking pan.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smooth the top, and sprinkle with the remaining grated Cheddar and extra chopped scallions. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool and cut into large squares. Serve warm or at room temperature.
--------------------------------------

I added

1 can of cream corn
2 cups of corn kernels

I used 2 jalapeno peppers, and more would certainly not hurt.

The cornbread is moist and cakey. Next time I make it, I'll try a 2/2 ratio of flour/corn meal instead of their 3/1 ratio.

Anyway, this recipe is very tasty.

That John Hughes thing really pissed me off. Why HIM of all people?

Billy Wilder died 8 years ago and I don't remember anything like THAT for him (please correct me if I'm wrong)...yet he was 10x the writer that Hughes was.

i think they were trying to play to a certain demographic. i mean, i felt like they REALLY made an effort to keep viewers this year, esp. in the 18-35 range(ish?). most people watching the oscars may see a billy wilder retrospective come on and be like "meh" *click*, whereas a john hughes tribute with the appearances by the BRAT PACK?? folks are gonna watch that shit.

She took the post off Facebook. Still not looking forward to the talk we're going to have this evening.

Memo to those who enjoy horror movies: go see The Crazies. They did Romero proud.

Tell her if she's got the god-damn time to put all that shit out in the front yard just to make you look bad then she damn well has enough time to straighten the god-damn garage herself. If that happened to me I'd probably throw gas on all the shit and set the whole front yard on fire..

but that's just me.

It was all my shit, though. I'd cleaned out the garage a week ago, then rendered the thing useless anyway by emptying the excess contents of my van into the parking spot. It really did suck. But even she had said I could wait until the sib was gone to worry about it. Then she got mad this morning because I didn't want to call insurance to straighten out one of her medical bills. It was her bill and she had the day off, so I didn't see why I'd go into work late to do that. And then we hit the "I'm so mad everything ever is going to come up right now" point, hence: shit in the yard.

She really has some pretty solid complaints about me leaving shit half done; she just opted to bring them up by talking me down all weekend in front of my brothers instead of having a real conversation about it.

you need to use the classic Daniel DeSario line from Freaks and Geeks...

"What.? Are you on your period or something.?"

I'm very eager to see it! You know what a big Herzog fan I am. He's really starting to work with Hollywood's craziest stars.

My next dream teamup is Herzog and Tom Cruise.

I was surprised to see the director was the guy who did Sahara, which put off a stink so bad, I never got within 100 feet of it. He's doing Flash Gordon next, according to iMDB. He showed some real talent in The Crazies.

So help me, the new Tom Cruise looks pretty funny:

http://www.youtube.com/v/6kpYqtvKvyU

You actually have to give him credit: he built his career by choosing A-list films that catered to his persona. Now, widely considered a lunatic, he's not afraid to leverage THAT in a big budget movie to get his career back on track.
