I watched THE ROAD and A SERIOUS MAN this weekend..
The Road was really good but I don't ever want to see it again. Also, it messed up my weekend.. It was like a live-action adaptation of all my nightmares.. So I'll give it props for that..
A Serious Man was pretty good.. Sometimes I can't tell if the Coens are over my head or if they're just being obtuse. I felt like there was a subtext going on that I wasn't aware of and when I looked up a cast member on IMDB I noticed that the trivia section mentioned that there were similarities between the main character and Job from the bible.... wow. who cares... I liked it pretty much. It got a few solid laughs out of me. But I probably won't ever watch it again.

I saw Hurt Locker about a week ago. It is REALLY good. I'd put it in my top 5 for 2009 so far.
Jeremy Renner really makes the movie (no homo). He plays one crazy cowboy.
What I like most is that it's a character study about a type of person. That he's a soldier in Iraq could almost be incidental. A war is just the setting that brings out his personality the most.
He is an adrenaline addict. Half the movie is him defusing bombs and the scenes are very exciting.
The other half of the movie is about his failure in social situations, hanging out with his unit. He always finds a way to go totally over the line. He will not be outdone. He must be king cock.

I've been reading The Road.
Somehow I felt I had to read it first. Maybe I'll go see it next week.

It's cool that Kathryn Bigelow beat out Cameron for the Director's Guild award.

The Road is one of those movies that makes you feel your own impending demise.

It's probably their most obtuse, arty movie since Barton Fink. It's the most self-indulgent thing they've done in awhile.

Yeah, pretty funny.
She totally deserves it too. The movie kicks ass.
