Oh speaking of which.   I have a question to throw at the panel.

My boys do not care for the so called "jazz" music one bit.     Which I totally get.  The amorphous stuff that I tend to gravitate to doesnt have any of the elements that kids latch on to.    Steady beat.  Hummable melodies.   etc.        And I have no aspirations to have 5 year old jazzbos in the house.

But, I do want them to someday discover this stuff on their own.     So my question is... do I

1.   Continue to play it, so that years down the line, it won't be completely foreign to them and they'll have an easier time finding stuff they dig.

2.   Stop playing it, so that I don't create backlash that will later come out as "ugh.. this is like the crap my dad used to torture us with."

Just pick some jazz that's more accessible..  Like Dave Brubeck or some 'hard bop'.

i didn't care for much jazz until i was like 18 or so.  play some charlie mingus.  the super accessible ones like haitian fight song.  or try the sax solo from careless whisper.

I have no idea what the right approach is.   Funny thing is, although I like to pimp what I like to my friends, I don't do it to my kids.  I just count on the fact that they'll involuntarily have to listen to a lot of stuff I like simply because we share the same living quarters...

By the way, this passive approach seems to be working: my stepdaughter is into a lot of left-field stuff, music she just picked up because she happened to hear it while I was playing it.  Of course, she's also into a few shitty bands, but I was into a lot of crap at her age too.

Oh yes.   Its not like I'm sitting them down "listen to this!!!!".      We just take turns putting on albums, and they never complain about my selections, except when its jazz.

Just keep playing what you like, regardless of what they think.  In time, they'll play stuff you won't like, and you'll have to put up with it.
