Drunk(!), but resourceful(!) French man opens a bottle of wine sans corkscrew.

An American would just buy a bottle with a screw cap.

Hey, parents, and future parents: There might be a link between regular exercise and your child(ren)'s abilities with learning.

I'm sure our resident nattering nabob of negativism will question the science. But I reckon it can't hurt to keep your kids moving, regardless...

Seems music lessons help with "executive" functions of the child's growing brain, too; executive functions include "the ability to focus and avoid distractions, to subdue inappropriate impulses and to mentally manipulate the information needed to solve a problem or complete a task," which may lead to less instances of ADD and better problem-solving skills.

Nattering nabob of negativism, uh?  You talking aboot me?

I can see it now... All those middle class parents anxious about improving their kid's lot shelling large amounts of money so that their kids can do all those middle class sports...  Junior, you're going to play lacrosse whether you like it or not!

And then their kids end-up being jocks.

The next Crappitystock should either be in the Midwest or in Canada, imho.

Sounds like this one was a blast. Sorry I missed it.

Lacrosse is at least an upper-middle class sport.

Dan, Dan, Dan.

This is not the "Baby Einstein" movement. This isn't about parents trying to create genius offspring. This was first tested out on troubled kids (ADD, behavioural problems) and exercise (particularly in the morning) helped them with focus, and completing tasks. Yes, it raised their test scores incrementally, but it's not really about that as much as curbing the other issues. Which is why they're trying "preventative" measures in some kindergartens. See if they can lessen the incidence of ADD, etc., before it starts... There is very much a social element involved also, which is where the "dramatic play," dance, and team sports come in, if you read the article.

Dear Karen,

I'm joking.

Seriously now: I have no idea of the value of that study.  It's not my domain.  But the thing is (and I've bitched about it in the past) big newspapers and TV, mass media in general, write up these things, present them as if they were scientifically established facts, and then they don't bother doing following these stories.  Unless we dig through the professional literature, we'll probably never know how well this idea survived scrutiny.

Science reporting in mass media is there just to fill space and make the readers go How do you like them apples?

You're probably right. But I still think anything that might help kids end up with less fat and behavioural problems can't hurt, even if the "science" (and science "reporting") isn't backing it up fully.

But that's just me.
