Actually, it doesn't challenge my conception of reality.  See, if taking a chemical substance can give you a mystical experience, then that is clear evidence that mystical experiences are due to altered brain chemistry, not to supernatural gobbledigook external to the brain.   And if someone's personality can be affected and altered by a chemical substance, that is also evidence that there is no such thing as an immaterial (and therefore immortal) soul.
