That sounds right on.    I like the ideas about schooling.   You can start slowly.  Take a class or two online.  Just something to get the ball rolling.   To have that sense that you are moving toward something that you want.   And if time and money become easier in the future, you'll have a headstart to really tackle.

I was thinking about you last night and think you should also dive into something that you're passionate about.   Not for employment just to hold onto your center.     I'm not sure what that might be.   Music, writing, cooking.   Whatever you love already, make up a big project and pour yourself into it.     Not only to help firmly establish the difference between what you do, and what you do to survive.. but also its common for new parents to (happily) start to see themselves as nothing more than parents.     Its engrossing, but you've got to protect those borders that let you say "this is my shit right here, I'm useful to humanity all by myself".

and besides its fun!

jeff......what capt said.    also

I'd like to go back to school to become a psychologist, but I just don't see how we can afford to have me not working fulltime for four years.

this is the incessant dilemma.  there is SO MUCH more i feel like i should be doing with my life, if i didn't have to work THREE JOBS just to keep the mortgage paid on time.  i would love it if i could just do the museum thing, as it is a rewarding job that suits my talents but there ain't no money.  and after 6 years without a raise, that's not changing until i get a master's degree.  but where am i gonna find time for that? especially now with a kid on the way.

"If the cow had the cognitive ability to form thought and speak, would it say, 'Where's the milk? I'm not getting any milk,' " Judge James J. Morley asked.

I get that all the time.

Jimmy came over last night!

That's cool.  Great video too.  Probably your best video since 1939 World's Fair.

The part at the end where they attribute this to a guardian angel is annoying, but still.. watch this.

The guardian angels look suspiciously like parking poles.

Jeff, you're talented and bright as hell.

Apparently you still have income coming to support your family (take that blessing)...and now extra motivation to push in a different career direction.  Use the fuel.

I agree with the captain.  Pick an art project....one book, one script, one whatever, and focus on it.  Set aside an hour or 2 every day and push it forward to completion.  The creative spirit is what stirs you.

I want to thank you again for sending me that book when I was feeling at the end of my rope.  It meant a lot to me that you took the time.

So just keep fighting and make us proud.

Let's see: things I am passionate about... I really like writing. So toward that I am going to start working on that some, at least via a blog or something to get the wheels turning. The boat has probably sailed on me becoming the next big blogging thing. (Oversaturated market, tons of people with a headstart and all of that). But putting words down to remind myself I still can sounds alright.

I really think I might enjoy teaching high school kids. I have a background in English, but that market is packed. History would be fun, but in the current political climate, I feel like I'd be one overly effusive lesson on the achievements of labor unions from getting complaints to the school board. Math and science gigs are easier to come by. I don't have a deep course background in either, so that would be a setback. But I do think I could enjoy teaching science.

And Pat, I really hear you on the school thing. Even if I could afford four years of psych studies, am I okay with hardly seeing Simon until he's five?

I'm really glad the book meant something to you Kurt. Maybe I should pick it up again myself.

Thanks for the kind words.

The first thirty seconds of this sketch are painfully true and funny and sum up the feelings of many parents perfectly.

You can quit watch watching after that. The rest is lousy.
