Matt, you're making me feel very unhip: you're getting into all of these new bands... While I'm diving deeper into old psychedelia!

I don't believe anyone would classify getting into old psych as unhip. Least of all the musicians who populate the current lo-fi/noise rock/math rock/psychedelic folk/art punk/weird punk scene (Columbus/San Francisco/San Diego/L.A./Brooklyn/Montreal/Toronto, etc.), many of whom are leaning heavily on the psych pedal.

I dig a good deal of the "shitgaze" movement (I am not fond of the title) and I do because I believe the bands probably listened to a lot of the same music that I have. They filter in no wave, new wave, surf, folk, 60s rock, garage, prog through a 90s lo-fi aesthetic and there is little not to like about that. For me, anyway.

I believe I put up this Hella song once before (maybe years ago now?)

This is Wavves on album:

Same song with Hill:

This is the Ganglians:

I'm psyched for the Wavves/Ganglians gig. It's coming to my town on October 17...

On the first, though, I'm going to go see Anna Ternheim. She's hot shit in Scandinavia, but she's the first on a triple bill on a mid-week show at the Troubadour.

I like the music she makes...

Outside of Friendship Cove one of the Ganglians entourage took to chatting us up after he spotted me eyeing his copy of "Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience" in the rear window of his car. He even got it out for me to paw over while he regaled us with the tale of their border-crossing nightmare. After some time talking he was relieved of this duty by their tour manager Dane, with whom we swapped tales of working in health food stores (I noticed that the car was bedecked in "Don't Nuke Our Food" and other tree-hugger idioms), and then spoke of the inevitable collapse of capitalism (but not in so many words - we never mentioned capitalism, only "it"). After depressing ourselves some we all ambled in to watch Ganglians.

Becky and I were both rather surprised to hear both of them angrily denounce Obama as a total fraud no different than Bush. I brought up politics with neither of them and they both slagged Obama independently of each other. It was good to hear. And it wasn't the usual, "Yeah, yeah...our leaders suck...we apologize for being born within the borders of the American Empire." line that Americans generally feel they have to offer to Canadians - they actually sounded angry about it.

Probably because they voted for Obama.

Too bad they already declared the Montreal show the best show of the tour.

Oh snap!

(sigh)

The tour manager guy (who was probably younger than me or Becky) was really not looking forward to New York. Well, he was at least dreading the industry element of NYC gigs, anyway. He said he loved visiting New York for pleasure.

yep... I am not sure I had a point there...
