Hello one and all
Was it you I used to know
Can't you hear me call
On this old ham radio
All I got to say
I'm alive and feeling fine
If you come my way
You can share my poison wine
CHORUS:
No marigolds in the promised land
There's a hole in the ground
Where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grande
Is the king of the world
As far as I know
I don't want your bread
I don't need your helping hand
I can't be no savage
I can't be no highwayman
Show me where you are
You and I will spend this day
Driving in my car
Through the ruins of Santa Fe
CHORUS
I'm reading last year's papers
Although I don't know why
Assassins cons and rapers
Might as well die
When you come around
No more pain and no regrets
Watch the sun go brown
Smoking cobalt cigarettes
There's no need to hide
Taking things the easy way
If I stay inside
I might live til Saturday
CHORUS

I did more work today than usual... about 5-6 hours worth. Marginal improvement, but some improvement.
Thanks, Ritalin!

Mine ears are bleeding, having spent the evening in the Dragoon's Lair. I lost a pound in sweat, but gained it back double in Rock. Hail, satan.

If It Makes You Happy, Everyday is a Winding Road, Good is Good.
Those songs make me want to slit open babies and stretch their chest cavities over my ears, the internalized squall of hyperventilating, squealing toddlers in their death throes muffling the sound of the radio.

argh. I deleted those posts because I don't even want to think about it anymore...but... I will say that I know what I meant by "country music star" and I stand by it. That is at least how she is marketed here. Becky is from Calgary and she attests to the fact that Raitt is a staple for the rodeo set and the radio that goes with it. And my country music lovin' auntie really digs Raitt's blues based pop swill. She also classifies it as country (even if it is singer-songwriter blues based). I never endorsed the idea that Raitt was genuine country music, only that she is associated with that end of the rock spectrum.
The album sales tell us little because Raitt's 14 million most certainly do not enjoy the spread of Crow's sales. As you said yourself: Crow's career is more single based... singles = more pop radio play ergo the ubiquity of her music, which was the basis for my initial complaint. I couldn't name you a song by Bonnie Raitt nor would I recognize one.
In 1993 Crow released her DEBUT ALBUM and "All I Wanna Do" was immediately enjoying heavy rotation as a buzz clip on MuchMusic (and I assume other stations). My sister, who was then eleven years old, just HAD to own "Tuesday Night Music Club" and danced up a storm whenever her music came on.
Compare this to the fact that Raitt achieved her "peak commercial success" (according to Wiki) with her tenth album only four years earlier to Crow's debut. Raitt's music fits in with that jammy Road House/House of Blues sound that appeals to aging music aficionados who follow so-called "musicians' musicians" and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame set.
I really do not believe that in 1989 there were oceans of young girls were dancing in their living rooms to this:

It is simply not as musically neutral as Crow - Crow's music could have a dance beat dropped behind it and it would not sound markedly different.
