Y'all ever seen this?

C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America is a 2004 mockumentary presenting a fictional tongue in cheek account of an alternate history in which the Confederates won the American Civil War. The movie is presented as if it were a British documentary being broadcast on Confederate network television. As such, it disagrees with the orthodox Confederate American interpretation of American history and opens with a (fictional) disclaimer that suggests that censorship came close to preventing the broadcast, that its point of view might not coincide with that of the TV network, and that it might not be suitable for viewing by children and "servants."

It's actually pretty funny and clever.

Seriously, y'all should watch this. It's killing me. It's got a lot of levels of satire going on. I think Matthew in particular might like this.

I might start a detox on Monday. Oh, shit, Carolyn Mark is playing here on Wednesday. Um, I might start a cleanse next weekend.

I keep meaning to post this for you Karen... I got this kid's cd by Bloodshot Records called The Bottle Let Me Down: Songs for Bumpy Wagon Rides. It's alt-country types mostly, doing kid's songs. It's pretty great, even for adults.

Anyway, Carolyn Mark is on there doing a reading of "Three Billy Goats Gruff." Thought you might wanna hear it:

I thought you did post it. Or maybe you just mentioned it. Anyhoo, thanks muchly! I will get me forthwith to the HIWPYS Isles.

I almost torrented that one a couple months back. Stopped myself when I was overcome with fears that it would just be a South-slagging piece.

It's really not. It's about how we pat ourselves on the back for how the Civil War ended, when if one or two things had gone differently, the North would have lost and (this is the crucial part), slave culture would have fit much better into post Civil War US history than we'd maybe ever want to imagine.

The only parts that stood out to me as potentially over-the-top are the commercials for fake products scattered throughout... and if you hang out to the end of the movie you find out they're not even fake... several of them were sold until as recently as 20 years ago.

Really though, the way they overlay the events of the last 140+ years onto a "CSA" is pretty biting and frequently hilarious.

It's playing on IFC this month for those of you with that channel.
