on a related note, watched Star Trek this weekend.

I agree they overplayed the spock-has-an-emotional-side-that-is-wiser-than-his-logic angle.    But overall it still rocked my pants.

So I went to see Funny Peeps last night.  Pretty good but weird movie.  And long.  Did you know it's 146 minutes?

I do recommend it but it's not entirely successful.

Sandler's performance is very good, but he plays a pretty disturbing character.

I thought it was weird in the poster that Seth Rogen puts his head on his shoulder...but once you see the movie it's fitting for his character.

Sandler's character is extremely rich and famous and has no friends...so he hires Rogen to write jokes and be his friend...and their relationship is kind weird.  Sandler is very selfish and manipulative.  Rogen is kind of the bitch.

And Rogen pulls a dick move on his friend Jonah Hill early on in the movie...this act kind of makes it difficult to sympathize with either Sandler or Rogen.

It's a dark comedy because it's full of Shitty People.

Probably the real weakness of the movie is toward the end...there's kind of a strange and stagnant twist when Ms. Apatow finally shows up with the Apatow kids.  I thought that plot development was a misstep.  Before that Sandler is an asshole in a funny way...here he just becomes an asshole asshole and character motivation gets awkward and dark all the way around...plus the movie has been going on for 2 hours at this point and you're about ready to go, but there's more and it starts to peter out into depression.

But I think it's all very worthwhile on the whole and often funny.  And I do recommend it.

Don't go see the movie for Aziz Ansari.  he's barely in the movie.  None of the Raaaaaaandy! stuff from that internet video is in the movie.

It feels good to recommend recommendations.  It's too easy to hate what you hate.

People are really digging it and I think that's cool.

Abrams pissed off old Star Trek fans...but the net effect is he's making a lot more fans than there were before.

Trying to stay true to obsessive loyalists is a game of diminishing returns. Abrams did the right thing.

I thought it was a good dumb action movie, but a bad Star Trek movie.  Even by Star Trek standards, it was poorly written.  Jesse posted a list of plot holes, and Matt also spent some time pointing some things out.

Not gettin' on the Star Trek convo train no more. Not today. Nuh uh.

On the other hand, I'm perfectly happy to get on the Harry Potter hate train.

It's been a rough couple of weeks. The day I got back from New York, my sister's new kid starts having seizures. He spends the week in NYU Hospital's Pediatric ICU undergoing every sort of test: spinal tap, CAT scan, EEG, MRI, etc etc. So far, they've found nothing (which is a good thing), put him on meds that stopped the seizures (phenobarbital, if you can believe it), and sent him home. Since I was the only family member across the country, I was talking to my family three times a day getting updates. Very stressful.

Then, last week, our chihuahua Jack, who we got as a rescue a couple of years ago, starts collapsing. Three times in 36 hours. He's a sick dog as it is, with his Cushing's disease, enlarged heart, and hypothyroidism, but a collapse is still pretty dramatic. A panicked trip to the vet on Thursday morning (where I expected to hear the worst) resulted in a jiggering of his diuretics. He seems to be doing better.

Friday morning, our contractor's people came in to start taking down the walls of the room that will be the den. Having a dedicated media room is certainly an exciting prospect, but the month of disarray that will precede it is stress-inducing.

Oh yeah, and I have this nagging cough that won't seem to go away.

So when Johnny Taylor called us on Saturday evening and asked if we wanted to go to the movies, I jumped at the chance for escape.

My choice was the double feature of "It's A Bikini World" and "Angel, Angel Down We Go" at the Egyptian, but it's a chore to convince Heather to go to a revival house (although she invariably has a good time), so we decided to see the new Harry Potter movie.

None of us has read any of the Potter books, but all of us have enjoyed the movies thus far. Even the movies the Potter purists have disliked.

And after 2 hours and 33 minutes of watching the movie unspool, I can say without any hesitation.

This. Movie. Sucks.

Granted, the caveat being that if you'd read the book, you probably understand what's going on, what is motivating the characters, or what the fuck the whole goddamned point is. But me, I was alternately scratching my head or fighting off sleep.

Sorry for the long intro to the short review - it just occurred to me that I hadn't been talking about what was going on with me lately. grrr.

his administrations muted support for the coup in Honduras ...

i agree with most of your criticism in this post, but unless something has changed, i don't think that the above statement is true.  he didn't exactly support the president, but he definitely made it clear that he felt the coup was illegal.   which hannity, rush, and the rest of the    right wing media had a field day with...predictably comparing him to his "buddies", chavez and castro. funny how they all shut the fuck up about it after the military/police started killing zelaya's supporters. (and the military itself admitting that the action was illegal.) i distinctly remember thinking that if he would have sided with the military,  they would have no doubt chided him for that, incredulous of how "outrageous" this dangerous lunatic in the white house is. that's the biggest problem with conservatives these days.  there is no intellectual discourse/debate about anything.  they just feign outrage about anything and everything to stir shit up. and make shit up and repeat it until people believe it.  you know, like the real reason obama wants to reform healthcare is so we can kill old people faster to save money.
