What if, every time you got stuck writing your next big power-pop hit, you could just call the Fountains of Wayne Hotline to get you over the hump? Robbie Fulks imagines it, and records it, resulting in the best Fountains of Wayne song Fountains of Wayne never wrote. Meanwhile, the original Fountains of Wayne is no more (the band's namesake, not the band).

This is awesome. Fulks, if you don't know him, is an ex-Southerner based out of Chicago who's often called one of the best of the alt.country types. Really, he's just a straight-up country singer; it's just that Nashville doesn't have room for clever guys who write love odes to Susanna Hoffs or tender ballads called "God Isn't Real." Great, great songwriter.

He really nails the FoW sound perfectly here, production, vocals, everything.

postscript: Somewhere on the shelf is an unreleased Robbie Fulks video shot at The Hideout for a song called "Georgia Hard." The video has a trite storyline about a good southern boy who follows his gal to Chicago and loses her to some urban douchebag. I play the urban douchebag.

that's good.  Smiley

i knew robbie fulks when i lived up in chicago. one of my best friends up there was related to him by marriage and she'd always drag me out to see him. he's a really nice guy. he even played her wedding, which was out in the middle of a winery in rural central illinois (the weirdest place ever. it was as if cracker barrel decided to open up a winery. very "Kountry Kitchin"-y) . it was the most bizarre wedding i've ever attended. but he was fun as shit to dance to, at least.

Yeah, Robbie Fulks was supernice when we were shooting that video. Some friends of mine with a production co shot it and one of their actors bailed last minute, so I got drafted. Robbie was really nice and I think a little tickled that at least one of us was an actual fan.

The video was lousy though. It wasn't one of their regular directors, it was a producer taking his first shot helming... and it sucked. That's why it never came out.

Where is all the Kim hate coming from, FBP? I don't for a second think it's justified (I've met you and you're great) but it must be coming from somewhere. Did you piss somebody off? Someone spreading shit about you? Where do you think it;s coming from?

Also: Kim, I notice Firewater is one of your MySpace friends... that makes me happy... I was beginning to think no one else here liked them at all. Although they're spamming your comments with their tour schedule, which is odd and kind of douche-y. (That was more or less the prevailing review of them here... "odd and kind of douche-y.")

I also love that you're doing a Mucca Pazza show! Have we talked about them here before?

Mucca Pazza is a "circus punk marching band." Bamah has probably seen 'em. They're based out of Chicago. Really a fun show, if they ever come near your town: Balkan Brass, 50s sci-fi themes, Bartok, French Pop, you name it.

I actually only have maybe a half dozen vids on my YouTube, but two of 'em are Mucca Pazza:

Dear Kim,

When losers say shit about you, your friends will form a human shield and repel the bastards.

Fuck 'em.
