This made me laugh

It's an alphabetical list of "fake" books, that is, books that only exist as mentions in other books, like, say, all of those Kilgore Trout stories in Vonnegut's novels.

Early morning pre-coffe post.

Girl butt = yeah (leer ogle etc etc)

People in country X don't know Y. Remember that many of these polls are filled out by pranksters. While they try to be scientific... do you really believe that any Americans think that Buzz Lightyear was the first man to walk on the moon? I have a little more faith than that... today, at least.

Quick recap of last night: Went down to The Echo and saw Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3 (+1) perform Dream Syndicate's Medicine Show in its entirety. Damn. That was a great album 25 years ago, and it still holds up for me. The performance was tight and rocking. The only thing missing was a booze-soaked lead singer. At the beginning of the show, some guy came up to the stage and offered Steve his choice of whiskey or tequila. Steve politely turned him down, adding, "If I were using Method acting to do this show..."

Openers were "classic" LA punk band The Urinals. Competent playing, but all pretense of punk was gone. It was nice seeing a trio of well-adjusted guys play songs that they performed 30 years ago to an audience of 30 that was 80% family and friends. But it's not something I'd do again - although I just noticed that they're on the bill with the Teenage Jesus reunion, so...

Great list. The book I always want to find is "Poems and Rhymes Around the World," as referenced in Chuck Palahniuk's Lullaby.

That's true, but not always.  I have had quite a lot of experience teaching university kids (supposedly the most educated segment of the population) and, based on that, I find the results mentioned in Jeff's NY Times article believable.  I know, it's only anecdotal evidence, but still...

I would have loved to see that.  I'm a huge Dream Syndicate fan.  The Days Of Wine And Roses is way up there in my higgledy-piggledy, always expanding, never definitive, list of favourite records.

The NYTimes thing I linked wasn't the people in country X don't know Y bit, it was about what the average American believes regarding important scientific concepts as opposed to what scientists believe.

I think it's delicious that the half-life of the uranium for which she's campaigning is a very solid tool for proving the "six thousand year old" earth is actually billions of years old.

Most of these ignoramuses think that the only radiometric dating method around is Carbon 14!  Then they say Carbon14 is very inaccurate, which is kind of true in a way, since it's only good within about 40 000 years, but that's kind of besides the point when you're talking about the age of the Earth, which is, by the way, around 4.5 BILLION years.
