Random Tom Waits story I read today:

One day he was driving on a Los Angeles freeway when a fragment of a melody popped into his head. He looked around for something to capture the tune — a pencil or pen — but had nothing to record it.

He started to panic that he’d lose the melody and be haunted by it forever and his talent would be gone. In the midst of this anxiety attack, he suddenly stopped, looked at the sky, and said to whatever force it was that was trying to create itself through the melody, "Excuse me. Can you not see I’m driving? Do I look like I can write down a song right now? If you really want to exist, come back at a more opportune moment …  otherwise go bother somebody else today. Go bother Leonard Cohen."

Very Tom Waits.  I wonder when he started doing that?  If it was sometime in the last decade, that would probably explain why his last few records weren't very good... He let the good ones go away.

you think so?  i wasn't too thrilled with blood money and alice  but  mule variations and real gone have some great songs on em, as does orphans.   he was absolutely amazing when i saw him last year in mobile.

I agree on each of your points here: Blood Money and Alice were disappointing, Mule Variations, Real Gone and Orphans were strong showings (with a number of duds on each, MV being my favourite, Orphans being understandably unwieldy).

I wish I could see him live.

I know I have mentioned this before but... "Hoist that Rag" (from Real Gone) is one of his best. Sounded exactly like Latin Playboys backing Tom Waits. Incidentally or not, Waits appeared on the Los Lobos' The Ride the same year.

I started classes towards getting my real estate license this week.  Does that mean I am selling out?

That's totally rhetorical, BTW.

This would suck in all kinda ways:

Washington, Jul 9 : American actress and former Playboy model Shauna Sand has been revealed to have cheated on her ex-husband and soap opera star, Lorenzo Lamas, with his then-18-year-old son, A.J. Lamas.
