Yay, a Morten sighting! Howdy, sir!
I'm just a-plowing through a bunch of stuff I've missed of late (mostly in music-related Geek Isles) and drinking some wine. Hope you're having a swell nigh..... wait, it's morning for you, right?

saw this with Bammo and Plasto a while back

we watched that right before our last trip to chicago, then made a point to see the collection at the museum of contemporary art. was not disappointed at all.
I'd see that again, for sure. It's an awesome doc, and I wish I had the dough to fly off to Chicago to see the collection Pat mentions. Oh, and to visit Simon W. Webber, of course.

Friday night drinkin'! WHOO-HOO!
I have the After Dark horrorfest downloaded. I'm gonna go watch some motherfuckers get slashed!
(reflecting briefly on how creepy that sounds... eh, fuck it... y'all know I just mean horror movies)

Here's the NXNE Festival sked next weekend.
I wish I had the patience for these big fests, but I really don't anymore. Maybe I'm just too lazy to look at the entire sked -- there's a fuck of a lot going on. When/if I go, I tend to find one showcase and stay at that bar, instead of venue hopping -- and potentially missing stuff because you still have to wait in line at the next venue, even with a wristband -- and just see what's happening there. Pretty boring way to "festival" (yes, people use it as a verb here...ugh), but like I said, I just don't have it in me anymore (and no one to go with). And the shows I want to see invariably end up being the buzz bands, so they're packed and annoying and can't get to the bar and et cetera.
I'm hoping to try to hit the Black Lips show (free, outdoors) after my Pilates session next Thursday night (see? I'm boring!). I think they're also doing an unofficial show with Awesome Color, though I can't find that listing. Maybe that's pre-fest...?
Hank Pine and Lily Fine -- love them! -- are playing next Friday night in the 'hood, and again next Saturday afternoon. Seeing as I've hung/had dinner/done drugs with 'em (ahem), I reckon I owe 'em a visit.
Plus, they're just really really really entertaining and oddball and fun and sweet.
At my advanced age, I tend to just spend time going to see friends play, and even though I'd like to experiment with new stuff, it suits me better to go to one-off shows than to these multi-band affairs.
I dunno.
I've seen the new Wilco doc (in the Hot Docs festival), so will have to take a closer look to see if there are any other films to go to that might make it feel like I'm participating in music again (and this fest), somehow.
sigh.
A couple of local labels have finally (!!!!) cottoned to the idea of doing daytime showcases/BBQs like at SXSW, so that there are alternative venues/times/etc for some of their bands to play, but it's still limited (plus, what do we really know about BBQ up here anyway?). The Kelp Records honcho (from Ottawa, for those who don't know) did a fun showcase a few years in a row, starting a couple years before anyone else in Toronto was doing the BBQ thing (with Flecton, Jim Bryson, Andrew Vincent, my buddy Chris Page, etc. etc.) at a hitchhiker's hostel...turned out to be a great venue because it's close to most of the other showcase venues, was free, had its own bar, AND happened to host some of the NXNErs from outta town, so always a built-in audience who could spread the word. It felt really sweet and grassroots and fucking good local(ish) music to boot.
In unrelated-to-NXNE news, just saw a listing for Adam Franklin's solo show (or with band, whatever). Liked Swervedriver plenty, but I haven't followed anything beyond that. Anyone know this new stuff?

I read that lineup and wonder if there are multiple interns whose sole responsibility is to verify the idiosyncratic capitalization of band names.

I should really get to that script soon. Why do I not want to read (probable dreck) at 11pm? I don't have a choice though, as I'm likely to be trashed tomorrow night after the Mint Julep and wine lady fest (as opposed to mildly amused right now) and have plans Sunday, too. Why oh why did I promise I'd have this read by Monday? (I have others, too, but I made no such crazy plans to read. This one is by a current client, so need to give feedback asap. argh.)

I couldn't even get through the whole thing. But they obviously need to visit the Idiosyncratic Capitalization of Band Names Isles, forthwith. (Except we don't want their kind 'round here.)

Karen, I realize horror isn't your bag necessarily, but did you hear anything about a film that played TIFF this year called
Deadgirl
? It just popped up on video and has an original (if disturbing) plot.

I'm a-ok with horror (though I like the funny, like Evil Dead), but I'm not so big on following TIFF. Oops, there's that big fest resistance again. Tell me about that one... I'm sure I read about it (so refresh my memory), as I read all the listings, just don't, you know, actually line up for stuff, or, like, do things.

Going downstairs/outside for a smoke. If my log accidentally falls out, it's not personal, I swear. I'm sure I'll be feeling it again in no time.

(not my capsule description.. and I said it was disturbing)
Deadgirl is about two high school kids who find a dead girl in the basement of an abandon insane asylum and realize that she's not actually dead. After realizing that she can't be killed and isn't really "alive" enough to escape, they turn her into their sex slave.
But you know, this being a horror movie and the misogyny being part of the setup not the payoff, I am assuming there is some seriously fucked-up comeuppance.

Wow. Ok, sounding vaguely familiar. Avail on video now?
Watched Control last night (finally), in different movie "news." It's ok, I guess, but from Debbie Curtis' book/perspective, so it's slanted. I guess all movies are slanted to someone's perspective.Still, good music (duh) and surprisingly decent performances -- even though the lead wasn't tall/gangly enough. Samantha Morton, as Debbie, is actually less sympathetic in the movie, as in the book.
Damn, ok, really going to read that script now. I swear.

Thank you. I always thought that
