Touche. Though I do believe that The Roots simply botched their attempt to play a Beach Boys-styled song. It was incredibly lame and the proceedings made me hate the Roots just for their participation.

Did Berry actually sue them for that? I thought that they acknowledged the 'influence' on Berry-styled rock n roll on that one? I know very little of rock and roll lore.

I watched some Fallon last night since I missed Conan.  Yes Jimmy sucks, but I am amazed he got the Roots to be his band.  They're terrific.

I thought he did, actually, but now that I look on Wikipedia, it looks more like he made noises he was going to sue, so Murry Wilson simply handed him the copyright. (As a gesture intended to prove they never intended to rip him off). Murry the genius gave away the rights to the lyrics, too.

saw the roots open for the blues explosion/beastie boys in '95.  they were excellent.  back then, it seems like there was only 3 of them.  a drummer, a stand up bass player, and a lyricist/beat box guy.  i was impressed.  this was actually the first out of town trip that kim and i took together. (new orleans...may 95 i think) we took in a bit of jazzfest that weekend, too.

That record by ChesnuTT, The Headphone Masterpiece is the absolute SHIT. Like a demented cross between Prince & Bob Pollard, scuffling, funky, sexy, lo-fi rock-funk. I give that record my highest possible recommendation. As in, "You don't have this? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?"

I loved the Chesnutt album when it came out. I was volunteering - teaching a computer class in the local jail - and I brought the CD in for the women to hear - it was cool turning 'em on to some indie funky shit.
