The Yankees should let CC DH when he pitches.  He wants to swing the bat.  That's why he was so reluctant to sign that big contract with an AL team.

Why didn't NY use Babe Ruth as a 2 way player?  The guy was a hell of a pitcher.

You definitely made me ...whatever it is I am.

In other news (in the shortest news morsel possible): Distraught flyer opens airplane door and jumps to his death at 7000 metres (sorry, Yanks); pilots somehow manage to land the plane with the door still open.

Both parts of that story are fucking un-fucking-believable. Fuck.

Why didn't NY use Babe Ruth as a 2 way player?  The guy was a hell of a pitcher.

The same reason the Cubs don't use Carlos Zambrano as an outfielder, even though he's one of the best hitters on the team: current talent conditions make one half of his two-way status so much more valuable than the other that the risks of letting him burn the candle at both ends outweigh the benefits. Whereas in Ruth's time, a mammoth power hitter was a rare bird, worth much more than an above-average lefty starter, today Zambrano's worth as an ace pitcher is much higher than his value could ever be as a hitter.

Good on you for touting Ruth as a pitcher though! He doesn't get enough credit. Back before Bonds got tagged as a roidhead, that's how I used to destroy people who argued that Barry was the best player ever, not the Babe.

"Hmm. 73 homeruns? That is impressive. What's his personal best for pitching scoreless innings in the World Series? Doesn't pitch, eh? Ruth threw 29 2/3 scoreless in the Series."

It's also fun pointing out how much better Babe was than *anyone* else in his time. The first year he hit 50+ homeruns was 1924, when he hit 54. How impressive was that? In the entire major leagues, only one team managed as many--an entire team.

The Babe was awesome. This book about him is a favorite of mine.

most accurate sign spotted at the tea parties...

i went and hung out for awhile at the tea party in front of the museum yesterday.  what a joke.  they had a public megaphone and people kept taking turns spewing venom.  laughable how none of them really know what they're mad at. mostly shit about taxesand socialism.  a couple "where's your birth certificate?" shout outs for obama...   i totally wanted to grab the megaphone and say,  "isn't it great that as americans we can assemble in this beautiful park?   you know how this park is paid for and maintained??  TAXES!!!  all these police that are keeping us safe in case someone gets out of order?  TAXES!! the roads you drove your big fucking SUV's down to get here and the paychecks for the people who built them??  TAXES!!   and the people that are gonna come and clean up all this tea you guys are dumping everywhere??  TAXES!!  and all you old people...i KNOW you don't want anybody taking your medicare away... that's right. TAXES!!   now shut the fuck up and go buy a shitload of stock in lipton before the day is done and sell it tomorrow!  FREE ENTERPRISE!! WOOOOOO!!!

so...if i would've gone through with this, i'd have been on keith olbermann tonight.  a few minutes later (after i went back into the museum), at the same pensacola tea party, this guy, in the video below, had his say.   he actually got people to boo when he told them that they just received a tax cut.  and he was featured on olbermann tonight.  now he's got his own blog and is a youtube hero.  my speech was better.  (next time, gadget.)

If Babe had stayed in Boston and just pitched, he would still be in the Hall of Fame.  I'd say he was more than above average.

But yes he was the greatest player ever by far.
