Thing is, Picasso kept evolving and pushing the envelope as he aged, he didn't become complacent and lazy. 

very debatable. if anything, he was able to fool people into thinking so. which in itself is a sort of brilliance.  in a madonna sort of way. but no, i don't think he was reeeeally pushing any envelopes the last 30 years of his life.  but he could still sell everything he created for a king's ransom,  even if it was just a napkin scribble.  at least david bowie is trying new things with every record. even if those new things are crap, he hasn't stopped moving. 

I guess that David Bowie is still doing what he has always done, in a sense.  That is, he is still kind of ripping other people for ideas, making them his own, and then selling them to the masses.  However, the people he was ripping off in the seventies were much more interesting than the people he is ripping off now.   Also, back in the seventies, he was a few years ahead of the trends.  Now he is a few years behind.  

As for Pablo Picasso, well, two tings about Pablo Picasso: firstly, in my opinion, he never ceased being Pablo Picasso.  All he did was always his own, I think.  Secondly, I think Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole.  I mean, he was only 5'3" but girls could not resist his stare.  And the girls would turn the colour of the avacado when he would drive down their street in his El Dorado.  So yeah, I believe he was never called an asshole.  At least not in New York.
