it seems to me that the only bands that still receive  critical praise get it BECAUSE they're extremely derivative..   Seems like (in Memphis anyways) that people turn out in droves for any act that authentically replicates some vintage sound.  That way they can show off their musical knowledge by citing all the musical references.

Take the Hold Steady for instance..

I don't mind a certain degree of imitation.  But you need to make that vintage sound you're copying your own, you must add something to it that makes things unique, so that we know that we're listening to you, not your influences.  Otherwise, you'll be too derivative.

and if I can just blow myself for a minute here.. I always thought that originality was the greatest goal you could shoot for.. especially now that it seems like everything's been done..

usually, as soon as I hear something in a Dragoon song that immediately reminds me of anything else I cut it.

I don't do it as much as I used to though. I think it always bummed out my friends.. someone would have a great riff then I'd be like "that's 38 Special.."  and you could just see their little heart break.

Original Spock Klings-on to role for Alberta town in movie premiere

I'm with Tripp.

With the one exception that if the source material is just plain siilly.    If a riff sounds like say.. Russ Ballard or Juice Newton, it can stay.

Take the Hold Steady for instance..

I could probably make an argument here about how the Hold Steady don't merely recreate a sound but repurpose it, what with the contrast to the vocals and all, but honestly, as much as the sound works for me, I'm just tired of listening to a paunchy bald white guy use $52 words to tell me about teenagers on street drugs.

So I've lost my interest in them anyway.

My dividing line for derivative music is whether the people seem to be playing the music because that's what they like and it supports the songs they want to play or whether they're just sort of recreating something in a lame animatronic US presidents at Epcot kind of way. This is why, despite being a huge fan of Sun and the like, I fucking despise modern rockabilly. There's something in the way they need to recreate everything just so that makes it really irritating to me.
