Have you ever read The Cruel Sea? It's all about the North Atlantic during WWII from the point of view of a boat used to protect ships crossing the atlantic. It's really good.

Lately I've been into adventure type books since my life lacks adventure.  Just picked up a book from the library last night called "the lost city of Z" about some guy in the early 1920's looking for the city of El Dorado in the Amazon. Just finished one called "Curve of the world" about a guy who's plane goes down in the Congo and he freaks out and leaves the plane...good stuff. Also in the middle of reading "The Snow Leopard" ...that one is really opening my mind.

Other books I have read recently...

Canoeing with the Cree
Heart of the Sea
Running the Amazon
Missippi Solo

Those all sound really cool. Right now I can't seem to stay with anything unless it's about a war. The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam is really good.

I guess that's about as close as you would get. Make sure to eat some potatoes at some point today.

I've got a thing with the sea lately...actually tried to join the coast guard reserve -- too old....was going to buy a kayak...but now I might be getting the boot in the next month...so need to conserve money. The missus just got laid off yesterday...she's a teacher so she has a job through the end of the school year...and then she'll actually get unemployment...so that won't be so bad.

but then i found out that her friend's husband has  a kayak that he doesn't use and said i could borrow it for a while...so i will be hitting the water...

cause sometimes whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.
