I keep catching bits of Talladega Nights on tv and that is one fucking huge pile of shit.. it makes me weep openly for America that people think that brainless, soulless bullshit is comedy. EVERY SINGLE PERSON involved with that movie should be water-boarded for their involvement.
vs. Okay, I have to talk about Talladega Nights now.
Maybe I've completely lost my mind, but I thought it was absolutely brilliant from beginning to end. One of the truly great comedies ever to come out of Hollywood. I've always liked Will Ferrell, but I had no idea he had this kind of thing in him. I've always seen a little bit of Andy Kaufman in him, but this is the bravest thing he's ever done. It's my 2nd favorite comedic moment of the year after Colbert's roast of Bush.
Every single second of the movie is pointed with multi-layered satire...but it's always funny. It never crosses the line and becomes too heavy-handed or political, but it still makes all of its points very subtly. It is merciless...even towards itself.
This movie should've played at Cannes and won the Palm d'Or. I'm serious. I'm telling you this is the best movie I've seen all year.
None of the critics are really getting behind it because they're either too dumb to get it or they're too scared to go out on the limb for it and admit the masterpiece that it is.
This is the true movie of the moment. This is the M*A*S*H (the movie, not the tv show) of this generation.
It says every single thing about where and who this country is right now and our position in the world (on every level imaginable)...all while never being pretentious about it (as I am), and never sacrificing entertainment value or humor.

i also kinda thought that all the stuff you don't like about it was on-purpose (product placement, etc.)

Product placement is product placement.. I don't like it when 30 Rock does it either no matter how much they acknowledge to the audience that they don't want it in there either.

some sort of edict came down from on high that product placement is not only the norm now, it is enforced. Thats why you have all these people creating shows that cater to product placement. Shows where the main characters work at someplace like Lowe's ( CHUCK, REAPER ) they've made product placement part of tv's dna now.
Although I admit, I love Reaper..

i didn't mean that it was an accident. ne'er mind. i know. i understood your comment as saying that the product placement was intentionally obvious as to overstate it with a bit of satirical irony. at least i think that's what you meant. i was just being a dick. by the way, i kinda like that movie. at least some of it. i only watched it once.

I think there's probably some good stuff in Talladega Nights but I get burned up when I see most modern comedies because they usually kill the comedy with things like bad soundtrack choices and just overall bad editing. Also, really, for just lowering the bar in general. I understand that most Americans have to have their comedy dumbed down. Especially something aimed at the Nascar crowd but jeez.. Adam McKay takes stuff that absolutely should be funny then kills it in the editing.
I'll shut up now.

My Talladega Nights review got me laughing.
I bought a big bucket of fried chicken and watched it at a redneck drive in.
My perspective mightve been a bit skewed that day.
