I'd be curious to hear a Scott song actually.

i'm not gonna pretend like i didn't enjoy every second of those songs. i did.  but the third song, "blossom" (a scott song) is fucking GOOD.  the only thing missing is tripp's bass stretching every chord to it's maximum potential to give the song a parallel existence ( a hallmark of every grifters song- not to stroke your dick, but those basslines are what separates the grifters from a goddamn good band from the greatest band ever to rock the party.)  it's a total grifters song that needs a backbone.

I hope no-one feels they have to pretend anything around here.

Pfff, R____ doesn't share my taste in music, and she finds old samurai movies and bad science-fiction rather boring (but she likes Star Trek).  Yet, we've been together for 10 years.

NEVER question your own taste in ANYTHING.  if you like it, IT"S GOOD.  there is no argument. and nobody has to agree.  that's the beauty of preference.

Reminds me of a bit in some old film noir (and if y'all can ID it for me so much the better, but it's a good line either way). It goes something like:

"Face to face with a painting, we shuffle our feet and apologize. We say, 'I don't know much about art, but I know what I like.' If knowing what you like is a good enough way to pick out a wife or a house or a pair of shoes, what's wrong with applying the same rule to paintings?"

The only thing you need to pretend around here is that I'm always right.  Once you've done that, you can stop pretending.

I agree the third song would probably benefit from some Grifter-izing by the trusty rhythm section. The first one is the one that really needs help though. I hear a song like that and I think of the TBS and Grifter versions of "Spaced Out." The former having its moments but being kind of punchless without any build, the latter using a kind of counterpoint bassline to add tension and depth, building to a really satisfying climax.

Speaking of really satisfying climaxes... Eh, never mind.

S_ _ _ is talking about applying for a grant that would allow us to start our own Even Start program. She would be the childhood specialist, and I would be the ESL teacher. I could start class at a more reasonable hour and probably not have to be teaching so many hours. Also, no boss. I don't know how serious she is sbout doing it, but it's fun to think about.

That is kind of awesome. PMAs right to you both.

When you find someone worthwhile, overlooking their questionable taste in entertainment is pretty easy.

...and it is I who ends up feeling like the one with the questionable taste in entertainment.

Come on, we all have things we love that we know are bad.  My love of bad science-fiction comes to mind... In fact, the fact that it's bad may be one of the reasons why we love it.

Although I agree that it isn't possible to establish objectively if something is good or not, we can often tell if it is good or not by comparison with other things we know (because there's a wide consensus amongst, oh I dunno, art historians, writers, lovers of rock music, film critics, etc.) are good.

It is also possible to accept that something is good according to certain criteria, without really liking it.  For instance, I can't stand Hemingway: don't like his writing style, and find his machismo ridiculous.  I hate Hermann Hesse, and he received a nobel prize.  I think Henry Miller was a navel gazing dickhead, bur many love his crap.
