Also on the hope for humanity front: increasing numbers of young Israelis are risking imprisonment by refusing to perform their required military service, a protest against Israel's occupation/treatment of the people of Gaza.

I thought Google were cutting jobs anyway. Perfect opportunity to be discriminatory, while making it look like recessionary downsizing! It's win-win!

Go for the book. It's an odd read--none of the characters have names or backstories, the dialogue bleeds together, sometimes with entire conversations mixed into paragraphs with different characters' words differentiated only by commas. And it's bleak. But it's really good all the same.

OK!

All right, I got me some cookin' (making veg chili, a cauliflower/potato curry, and a peanut/tofu/soba noodle dish) to start for the week ahead. Vegetables don't chop themselves you know.

I had a cauliflower/potato curry last Sunday at one of the buffets here, and it was MOST delicious!  I normally don't care for cauliflower but this mess looked so good I had to try it.  And it was yummy.

So, I hope yours is yummy as well, I guess!

Sounds damned yummy. I wish I could stand cooking or any kind of food preparation in general.

Did you hear about the thing where Joaquin Phoenix said he was going to retire from acting to pursue a music career?

If you did, like me, you probably assumed it was to pursue some rock or country thing, a la his singing in Walk the Line.

But--and as much as I would like to believe this is a gag, it does not seem to be--it is as a rapper. He's doing an album with Sean Combs.

Here he is rapping from this weekend:

Oh.My.   Huh.  Yep, that's something.

Anyone catch Fleet Foxes on SNL? I do like them fellas, music-wise. But the roomie and I decided that, despite the hippie hair/facial hair, they're still very pretty/hipster (hippie hipster? gah!), and I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired of that trying-too-hard thing. (And if they weren't trying, they wouldn't have been wearing the stylish skinny jeans, etc.) I'm'a gonna go back to just listening to bands and trying to avoid seeing them in videos and on national television. (Live is a different story, though haven't really seen anyone since Deerhoof in Dallas, back in November.)

Moetown, I'd much rather eat than cook -- in fact, I find it a chore in many ways, and the bad attitude has resulted in not being particularly good at cooking -- but I work in the crack-'ho-and-homeless-mission part of town (shut up!!), and there really isn't anywhere good around there to go for lunch (especially for veg food), so I feel like I don't have a choice. I rarely cook for other people (never have dinner parties, unless the roomie's making the food) because I'm just not that confident in the kitchen. I think I did make an edible veggie pad thai for Ryan. And the sugar cookies I made with his kid on New Year's Eve turned out all right, so that's something.

The drinking helps make the cooking more fun. I try to have the prep work done (with knives!) done before I get too blotto. Wink

Off I go now for more "fun"! Woot!

I thought Fleet Foxes did pretty well last night.  Four really good singers in the band.  And their vocals are tight.  It takes a lot of balls to do what they do, and they do it very well.

I don't understand the guitarist who doesn't sing.  You'd think he must be an amazing player, but not that I could see.

I kind of wish they had a few songs that were a little more, uh, exciting.  But I do like them too.

I don't think you can get on SNL without "trying too hard" with the style.  Looking at a band is sometimes a price you have to pay for the music.
-----------------------------------------------------
As for the episode itself...pretty bad.  Last week with Neil Patrick Harris was actually pretty good, but I don't think there was one quality sketch this week.

The Cheney interview was one tired joke.  Hammond's impersonation is pretty good though.

I felt bad for Rosario Dawson with all the racist skits they wrote for her.

I do enjoy the talents of Kristen Wiig.  The Gilly routine was pretty thin, but I enjoyed it some, particularly the dance.  Sometimes a funny face and wig from her is good enough.  And then Wiig's travel expert was mind boggling in a good way.

Jason Sudeikis usually annoys me 3 times for every 1 time he makes me laugh, but his Ricky Gervais was funny...and the Gitmo thing wasn't bad either.

I thought they should've ended the Gilly sketch right after the little dance. Then it would've been this weird, surreal little thing...instead of yet another extended SNL "joke." I thought Jason Sudekis' Ricky Gervais was pretty bang-on. Overall, a terrible terrible episode. Fleet Foxes sounded amazing, I have to say (next time, I'll just close my eyes when they're on telly...ha!). Stunning vocals, actually. That first song (I'm terrible with titles unless it's a phrase repeated often in the song, like "I Wanna Be Sedated," or, "Covered With Flies") was very Neil Young, I thought. I'm probably not the first one to think that.
