Odd subculture I never knew about: homemade remasters. Some classic records--notably Beatles and Stones--having been so indifferently mastered for CD, some folks have taken it upon themselves to remaster them on their own. The "Mickboy" Stones ones were the ones I heard first and they are kind of jarring--all of the mud taken out and the bass and guitars turned way up.

But the "Dr. Ebbetts" Beatles remasters are like gifts from the audio gods.

Check out this cleaned-up version of "In My Life."

...though maybe that's not the best example since that's one of the tracks that was already officially remastered on the Anthology. Still, I've had the CD of that record for years and it sounds like dogshit next to this.
